Fact is most of all, they love him because he portrays himself as the ultimate Alpha male, and they are instinctually social- hierarchy-based thinkers. Their hatred of all things egalitarian, remotely 'socialist', DEI/Affirmative Action, hell even the concept "empathy" stems exactly from this same basic instinct. It tells them that things are not SUPPOSED to be "equal" or "shared", and there are supposed to be alphas, alpha-adjacents, and betas, and they view power who have attained power and riches to be inherently superior human beings, who earned their place. Being into the "prosperity gospel" stems from the same basic root cause.
Eventually after minimal prodding from their social superiors, they'll fall back to thinking he has some grand strategy to fuck Mamdani over and/or he think's he'll get something from it from Mamdani. Which is also just dandy by them, cause they'll come to understand it's still "Alpha" shit, and he, being all "successful", knows better than they do. They know they are Trump's betas.
The good news is I'm mostly describing the most hard-core of the base, there's probably only about 25% who think like this (and it isn't all just men, sadly). As long he doesn't completely subvert our democracy, we should be able to recover from at least some of the damage.
