... try to figure out what the hell motivates someone to commit such a heinous act, I couldn't help noticing that a critical point seems to have been overlooked. The report said that a rifle was found nearby, but that they did not believe there was another shooter.
Wait a minute... if the rifleman took his own life, the weapon would more than likely still be in his grasp, not "nearby". Which strongly suggests that there was, in fact, a second armed individual, possibly a vigilante or LEO who almost certainly saved more lives by killing the psychopath responsible for the deaths of two firefighters. The location and angle of the fatal wounds would determine conclusively whether or not the killer committed suicide, or was taken out before he could murder more firefighters.
This is murky story, and I hope more detailed clarification will be forthcoming.

Oh, and a minor note to the sheriff, or more likely, the reporter who misheard what he said: "... we homed in on that cell phone..." would be correct, not "honed in". One hones a blade, but homes in on a cell phone signal, just as a homing pigeon finds its own dovecote, or a guided missile finds its target with a homing device. A responsible journalist would know the difference.
Nitpicky, I know, but those of us who are paid to write are obligated to get it right.
