My grandmother told me that she could be a schoolteacher or a nurse. She chose to be a teacher and went to what they then called "normal school" for training and her first job was in a one room fairly rural schoolhouse where some of her students were older than she was. And she fought for them, some worked as well and she tried to make sure that as many as possible took the NY State Regents exam which gave them an advantage in the job market. I have no doubt that she did an excellent job, but she told me that if she was in school now, she'd want to become an environmentalist. And she was proud that her four children - and her 11 grandchildren - all graduated from college. She took me to my college interviews.
