gloat in public once Trump was declared the winner. He's a nice person, and I'm having a lot of trouble not wanting to shun him.

Simply put… if he supports that man, he’s not “nice.” He just hasn’t classified you as his target… yet.

But I had an acquaintance who was gay and he and his partner voted for Bush the Second. I asked why and it was purely for financial reasons, and the fact that they didn't care about the other issues. The partner was a very successful attorney in Dallas and they knew that they wouldn't be affected adversely by any Republican policies. They both came from wealthy families. They had kind of a "live-in aide" from México and they treated him pretty badly. Neither of them could understand any Spanish, and that was just as well. My acquaintance was killed crossing the street to work by a shuttle bus. I assume his partner got a huge settlement.
In any group there will always be some who are perfectly happy to put their own interests first.

during the whole "Family Values" era, I asked one gay friend who consistently voted for Republicans, "Why do you support them when you know they are anti-gay and have an anti-gay platform?" His response was, "I don't care about all that. I'm just in it for the money."

Trump hasn't killed anyone for being LGBTQ+ yet, but I'm pretty sure several Arabic and/or Muslim cultures have. That one always left me scratching my head. We got issues, but when it comes to civil rights we are a long ass way from the worst.

it's a result of social media and wanting likes and views. They don't represent the larger lgbt population.

But people like to point them out becsuse they are so bizarre.

for their orientation, but since I'm not gay, I don't have a clue what that would be.

Maybe, like too many others, they just wanted a cheaper bag of Doritos,
and voted for that above any social concerns...

But there is a fair amount of trans-hostility in some corners of the gay community (misogyny among some gay men, and TERFy stuff among some lesbians). Trump played to that big-time, but Trump himself did not target people who were "merely" homosexual. While I doubt that hostility would have pulled in many women (because of the other women's issues Trump was horrific on), it might have pulled in gay men.

There are plenty of them. They think that if they profess their loyalty loud enough (and donate enough money), they are automatically protected from any harm that might befall the "others." Ernst Röhm was protected for a while, too. Until he wasn't.
