Trump advisers contemplating cuts to Medicaid and other welfare programsDonald Trumps economic advisers and congressional Republicans are discussing possible cuts to Medicaid, food stamps and other government welfare programmes to cover the costs of extending the president-elects multitrillion-dollar 2017 tax cut.
The cuts could mean new work requirements and spending caps, according to the Washington Post, citing sources involved in the talks, including aides in Trumps transition team.
Extending the tax cuts most of which are due to expire next year could add $4tn to the national debt, which already stands at $36tn.
But Republicans fear triggering a political backlash by slashing programmes that serve an estimated 70 million Americans to pay for a tax cut that disproportionately benefits the wealthy.

(6,597 posts)just have to scare the hell out of poor people who would literally die if harsh cuts are made. If they escape death, they will live a miserable or more miserable life.
But Im a lot less sure about extent of cuts than before trump and his henchmen.
Fortunately in a perverse way lots of people, insurers and companies make money of Medicaid and Medicare and will lobby against cuts.
And, more importantly, a huge chunk of those 70 M are GOPers and voted for trump. And Bubba in rural Alabama aint gonna pay $5,000 a month toward moms or grandmas nursing home care.
