Social Security employee warns 'people could be out of benefits for months' as staffers who fix payment glitches exit

Social Security employees with key expertise are reportedly heading for the exits amid President Donald Trump's drive to slash the federal workforce, raising the risk that any technical glitches could interrupt benefits.

That's as the administration looks to shrink the Social Security Administration by thousands, including via voluntary separation offers.

One Baltimore-based staffer who works on payment systems told the Washington Post that nearly a quarter of his team is gone or will soon be gone due to resignations and retirements.

Those with top software skills are leaving the Social Security Administration to get high-paying jobs in the private sector, he added.

As a result, several software updates and modernization processes that were supposed to be completed soon will likely miss their deadlines, and many of the experts who fix glitches that can stop payments are now exiting, the report said.

Of course Howard Nutlick said real Americans won't mind missing a payment.

Is a fan Elon or responsible for the demise of the country. Many people thought they were helping the planet when investing in a Tesla vehicle. I think it is dangerous to talk up such attacks.

When those social security deposits stop coming for a few months and the people in the last quarter of their life start to get hungry then things will start to get serious. They will blame Musk and anything he's associated with. Trump will try to evade responsibility. We'll probably even see a few people burn their own Tesla cars.

Than pi$$3d off people burning the cars of random people. Just saying we shouldn’t foster or plant the seeds that attacking cars is an acceptable form to voice political displeasure. Innocent people will be hurt and possible killed. After we clear the roads of Teslas what car make will they chose to attack next because as we know we have people itching to shoot something!

for months …” is brutal for those who live month to month, but the even worse part is: will they/we get them back and what will it take?

“Months” could turn out to be optimistic. I suspect many benefits will be ‘disappeared.’

I've been protesting since inauguration.

Next Saturday, 05Apr2025, is a big one. Everyone should show up.

They'll be in every state and DC, and, as I just learned while looking for links for you, abroad.
https://www.democratsabroad.org/scottstroud/hands_off_protest_rally_on_april_5th

this is the one I'm going to:
https://mobilize.us/s/dhv12t

This is probably going to be the biggest protest since he took office. In my area, there are protests planned in at least 3 cities near me.

https://www.womensmarch.com/initiatives/peoples-veto-day-washington-d-c

On BlueSky I post these 2 links daily: https://generalstrikeus.com/ and https://generalstrikeus.com/strikecard

I believe that nothing short of massive street action has a chance of saving democracy in the USA. I also advocate for a massive tax revolt.

But as a retired programmer, the only time you want to wholesale ditch working code is when it's beyond your ability to understand.

If the existing code is spaghetti (large code base), you don't replace wholesale, you peel off a function at a time, usually put it on a different server, and make sure it's all working properly before you take it live. At one point they did an estimate to fix SS code - it came to $10B -- far more than the problem was costing.

how they could apply a patch to the new code. The answer was to fix it in the orginal and re-convert it! So, you'd still need someone who could at least read COBOL. Of course. I always thought COBOL was pretty self explanatory.

DU is the postings and opinions of its members and what I'm saying is that these postings offer little hope to those of us who depend upon Social Security as our only
source of income. I find that depressing, but my only personal recourse is to look for a job. We all can only do what we can do.
I wish you well and you are a better person than I am if you can find hope here for the future of Social Security for all of us.

A few thousand people at a time losing their benefits and then having to spend months to "requalify".

And this is a white supremacist doing to work of who loses theirs, race will certainly be a factor in who he picks to stop getting checks.
