President Donald Trump said Saturday he doesnt care if automakers hike prices because of his tariffs. In fact, he encouraged them to.
Asked by NBC News Kristen Welker in a phone interview about whether he pressured automakers to avoid raising prices after his 25% tariffs on imported cars and parts go into effect, Trump denied that he told CEOs to control costs.
No, I never said that, Trump told Welker. I couldnt care less if they raise prices, because people are going to start buying American cars.

(50,904 posts)Even if you don't buy a new vehicle and rely upon maintenance and repair, there will shortage of parts and a substantial increase in cost for parts. You may not have transportation to get to work, to shop, to go anywhere.

The price of a new car has increased 30-40% in the last 5 years.

Hes falling apart. May more accidental revelations of truth speed the process.

(12,481 posts)And to send money to pay his legal bills. Now theyre finding out that Trump detested them from the beginning and is not at all concerned about how his policies hurt them. He is now the king and will declare himself president for life in 2028 because by then he will have destroyed all the safeguards against an imperial president, including the courts as he will have many positions to fill and all will be rabid supporters like Judge Cannon. He will rule that no federal elections will be held in 2028. Democratic states of course could hold elections anyway, but who would recognize them? By then, Thomas and Alito will have been replaced with even worst jurists who will approve every Trump action and crime. The Roberts immunity decision in effect made Nixons claim that its not a crime if a president does it into law.

It wouldn't.

(4,434 posts)up because people will just buy American-made cars." He doesn't drive or shop for cars. Basically, he doesn't know what he's talking about.
-- Owners are keeping cars longer than ever in automotive history -- an average of 12 years.
--Those cars are lasting longer. (Know people who have cars with 200,000 miles of them, and they're still going.)
-- Also available to auto shoppers is a lively used car market.
-- Unemployed people won't be able to afford new cars, no matter where the cars are built.
And there's this: According to the most recent data from Cox Automotive, the average transaction price for new cars is $48,641. Thats down slightly from the peak of $49,929 in December 2022.
Tariffs are expected to add anywhere from $3,000 to $12,000 to new car prices. But believe it will be closer to the latter price as "American" companies face retooling their production lines.
But the idiotic Peter Navarro insists tariffs are actually tax cuts and savings from tariffs will "trickle down." Right.
