My friend's wife passed away today.

I'm sad for him. She had had MS for a very long time. They welcomed their first grandchild on New Year's Day. Life sucks sometimes. As Warren Zevon said, enjoy every sandwich.

I'm not Jewish, but will help them sit shiva if needed. It's the least I can do for a minyan.

But she lived long enough to meet her first grandchild. That's probably what kept her going.

I worked with him for almost 20 years. Hard to believe. We spent almost every day in adjacent cubicles, and you really get to know someone with that much together time.

A few months from now, after the numb wears off, he will need your friendship more than ever. No doubt in my mind you will be there for him, after others have moved on and the depth of his loss really starts to kick in.
