I knew I hadn't logged in for years so I updated my password.
I went to log in today and I am told I will have to sign in with Log in. gov, if I remember correctly. So I log in the new way. It sends a code to my phone, I enter it, it sends a notice to my email, I have to go to my email and click on it, it sends my phone another code and then I get in to my SS web site.
Not sure if I can use the same email to change the way my wife logs in. I am done with this tonight, will work on it tomorrow.
They are phasing out the old way I always logged in via user name and password. Is this going to confuse older people and computer Troglodytes like me?

(38,914 posts)you can add other things that you do involving the Federal Government, such as Global Entry. That's where Login.gov starts to make sense.

(7,931 posts)after I set up the two-factor authentication. I had to upload a picture and video of myself. Then I had a live call with a rep for further verification. Then they sent an activation code via mail, which I entered when I logged in. Then I had access.
Yes, it's complicated. A live visit would be less complicated, but difficult in a different way. I'm sure a lot of waiting for an open appointment. They are really fucking things up.

(2,094 posts)I'm not comfortable w/ Eloon and his hacker goons having the ability for facial recognition.

(7,931 posts)It was an option. Doge didn't set that up.
Edit to add: Also it was a extra step I needed because my phone number had changed since when I first set up the login.gov account. I had forgotten my password and they couldn't send a pass code to my new phone, so I had to go through live verification as we as uploading ID, photo and video.
I actually doubt DOGE could come up with anything as secure or functional.

(2,094 posts)And I don't trust it. And I certainly don't want to give Eloon and his hackers the ability to use facial recognition. Who knows what plans they have for AI.

(27,325 posts)you can do what I did and select another option. They send your phone a code, you put in the code, they route you to your email account where you click on verification there, and I think another code to your phone, and then you are in.
From what the site says they are doing away with user names and passwords.

(5,255 posts)a while ago. They really make you jump through hoops to verify your identity but once youre in theres no problem signing in with just your email and password and a code they send.

(36,433 posts)I handle everything electronic in our family, but places like SSA generally won't allow the same email or phone number to be tied to two different accounts. So three times in a row now, when I logged into my spouse's SS account, it sent a code to her phone - and she was asleep or out of the house with her phone. So I had to make my self a reminder about what it was that needed to be done so I could remind myself to try again when she was in the house, near her phone.
