Elon Musk has announced a DOGE-led investigation into the personal fortunes of Democratic members of Congress during a town hall in Wisconsin, asking how lawmakers become millionaires while earning $200,000 a year.
The billionaire Trump ally declared an investigation into political opponents on Sunday night in response to a question from an attendee who asked whether the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had discovered any direct evidence of money sent to radical left Democrats naming Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
In response to the question, Musk replied that he was trying to figure it out:
Yeah. So there is a massive amount of corruption. But it is circuitous. So what happens is theres money that, obviously, its your taxpayer money that is then sent to various government organizations who then send it to NGOs, an NGO is a non-governmental organization, but obviously, if its a government-funded non-governmental organization, its just an organization. Its just a government.
And effectively, theres a giant fraud loophole, which is that the government can send money to an NGO that is then no longer governed by the laws of the United States. So theyll send the money overseas to one NGO, then theyll go through a bunch of them, and then Im highly confident that a bunch of that money then comes back to the United States and lands in the pockets of the people you just mentioned.
But it is a circuitous route. It doesnt go directly, but lets just say that theres a lot of strangely wealthy members of Congress where Im trying to connect the dots of how do they become rich while earning How do they get $20 million if theyre earning $200,000 a year? It sounds Nobody can explain that. So somethings Yeah, were going to try to figure it out and certainly stop it from happening.

Trump certainly wont push it because he wants to make sure his friends make money. Same with term limits; they always TALK about passing a term limits law but they never DO it.

(39,229 posts)Im really tired of this anti-government general feeling being used for specific actions. Lets see some details, man. We have Republicans in office who have actually been convicted of crimes in court by a jury. Stop smearing everybody. Its fucking un American

It sure seems as if trump is only in charge of golfing. I think he is mentally unfit organically, and requires other people to run the country.

(4,456 posts)wealthiest member of Congress.
Multiple outlets and projection tools place Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., as the richest member of Congress. The exact extent of his wealth is widely contested and frequently changing. Quiver Quantitative places Scotts net worth at $549.91 million, with Investopedia agreeing with the companys tracker.
However, back in June 2024, Finbold reported that his assets range from about $271 million to $808 million, according to the 2023 financial disclosure report. Finbold claimed that Scott has no liabilities, so his net worth would be somewhere between those two numbers.
The Republican senator was previously the governor of Florida between 2011 and 2019. His private sector gains come from co-founding both HCA Healthcare in 1988 and Solantic in 2001. During his time as HCAs chief executive, the company was convicted of 14 felonies for defrauding Medicare, Medicaid and federal programs.
The companys board of directors forced Scott to resign in 1997, though Britannica reports he received a generous retirement package consisting of approximately $10 million in cash and $300 million in company stock.
