Mediaite - Elon Musk Vows DOGE Probe Into These ‘Strangely Wealthy’ Dems: ‘How Do They Get $20M?’

Elon Musk has announced a DOGE-led investigation into the personal fortunes of Democratic members of Congress during a town hall in Wisconsin, asking how lawmakers become millionaires while earning “$200,000 a year.”

The billionaire Trump ally declared an investigation into political opponents on Sunday night in response to a question from an attendee who asked whether the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had discovered any direct “evidence” of money sent to “radical left Democrats” – naming Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer – by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

In response to the question, Musk replied that he was trying to “figure it out”:

Yeah. So there is a massive amount of corruption. But it is circuitous. So what happens is there’s money that, obviously, it’s your taxpayer money that is then sent to various government organizations who then send it to NGOs, an NGO is a non-governmental organization, but obviously, if it’s a government-funded non-governmental organization, it’s just an organization. It’s just a government.

And effectively, there’s a giant fraud loophole, which is that the government can send money to an NGO that is then no longer governed by the laws of the United States. So they’ll send the money overseas to one NGO, then they’ll go through a bunch of them, and then I’m highly confident that a bunch of that money then comes back to the United States and lands in the pockets of the people you just mentioned.

But it is a circuitous route. It doesn’t go directly, but let’s just say that there’s a lot of strangely wealthy members of Congress where I’m trying to connect the dots of how do they become rich while earning… How do they get $20 million if they’re earning $200,000 a year? It sounds… Nobody can explain that. So something’s… Yeah, we’re going to try to figure it out and certainly stop it from happening.

Not that I've heard.
Trump certainly wont push it because he wants to make sure his friends make money. Same with term limits; they always TALK about passing a term limits law but they never DO it.

It’s real easy to do a pump and dump in the stock market when you’re president and every word is taken as a sign of economic intentions

I’m really tired of this anti-government general feeling being used for specific actions. Let’s see some details, man. We have Republicans in office who have actually been convicted of crimes in court by a jury. Stop smearing everybody. It’s fucking un American

When did he become a prosecutor? Oh, that's right, President Musk has unlimited power to do what he wants.

It sure seems as if trump is only in charge of golfing. I think he is mentally unfit organically, and requires other people to run the country.

wealthiest member of Congress.

Multiple outlets and projection tools place Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., as the richest member of Congress. The exact extent of his wealth is widely contested and frequently changing. Quiver Quantitative places Scott’s net worth at $549.91 million, with Investopedia agreeing with the company’s tracker.

However, back in June 2024, Finbold reported that his assets range from about $271 million to $808 million, according to the 2023 financial disclosure report. Finbold claimed that Scott has no liabilities, so his net worth would be somewhere between those two numbers.

The Republican senator was previously the governor of Florida between 2011 and 2019. His private sector gains come from co-founding both HCA Healthcare in 1988 and Solantic in 2001. During his time as HCA’s chief executive, the company was convicted of 14 felonies for defrauding Medicare, Medicaid and federal programs.

The company’s board of directors forced Scott to resign in 1997, though Britannica reports he received “a generous retirement package consisting of approximately $10 million in cash and $300 million in company stock.”
