(65,739 posts)They're investigating, per bs media. How do they know it was an accident? Seems unlkkely to me.

(38,738 posts)VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) Three of the U.S. Army soldiers who went missing in Lithuania have been found dead in their armored vehicle that was pulled from a swampy area early Monday, according to U.S. Army Europe and Africa Command. Another soldier is still missing.
The bodies of the three soldiers were recovered after a massive six-day effort by U.S., Polish and Lithuanian armed forces and authorities to dig the M88 Hercules vehicle out of a peat bog at the expansive General Silvestras ukauskas training ground in the town of Pabradė.
The soldiers were on a tactical training exercise when they and their vehicle were reported missing early Tuesday, the Army said.

(272 posts)Its basically a swamp. They had to send divers down to the vehicle to attach cables. This is after trying to drain the water from that section first. There a large excavation equipment digging down to the level of the vehicle. I dont understand the conspiracy theories here. The US loses more troops to non combat incidents than combat for a decade.

(38,738 posts)and they are usually a mess. They were on exercises which would have been using the towing tank for that purpose.
I'm guessing the hatch was open for the tank commander being the one missing in this peat bog.
*People and things have gone missing in peats bogs for thousands of years. W/O spotting the tank track marks this could have been one of those unsolved mysteries.

(512 posts)An accident would put the bodies in the vehicle, not elsewhere. Cause of death may be released but if the cause was execution gunshots we may not hear about it for security reasons.
My guess at a possible scenarios.
Out on patrol
Stumbled into a Russian/Belarus infiltration unit
US Soldiers Captured and executed
Vehicle dumped in swamp to slow down discovery
4th soldier possibly held for interrogation
or
Out on patrol
4th soldier goes off the deep end
murders his fellow soldiers
Vehicle dumped in swamp to slow down discovery
4th soldier on the run.
Can't think of a logical explanation for the bodies not being with the vehicle that conforms to "accident".

(1,653 posts)is that they were riding with an open hatch, with one of them (the commander) with his head above deck. When they went into the bog he fell out and drowned outside while the other 3 couldn't get out and died inside.
Depending on how the carrier fell as it went in, it might have landed on him and pushed him deep into the mud on the bottom.
That explanation is far, far more likely than anything else.

(4,195 posts)If they were night training having an Armored Personal Carrier sinking would easily be deadly, in frigid waters you can drown in a very short time.
