Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI don't know if the Dem party can do anything about this but I know one thing that turns voters off is the endless texts
asking for donations.
They are so tiresome, especially around monthly and quarterly deadlines.
Problem is a lot of these texts quote Dems or are masquerading as directly from Dems when they are from Super Pacs, and they are so freaking annoying, I know it turns people off.
I don't know if the DNC can do anything about independent Super Pacs, but I'm sure most people don't know these texts are often NOT directly from the Dem party!
But also the party needs a better texting strategy.
Here's a couple I just got:

We're begging now... If you care even a little bit, rush $9 to save Social Security >> go.democracyfirstpac.org/033134

Polling shows the Democratic candidate is in the lead in FL-06, but early voting turnout still has Republicans ahead. Everything comes down to turnout tomorrow on election day.
When Elon dropped $20,488.90 to prop up his MAGA bootlickers, we launched our counterstrike. Our precision-targeted persuasion texts are firing out NOW.
It's time for us to leave it all on the field. Chip in whatever you can and let's finish the job: turnleftpac.us/final-push?t=TCDkoy

Of course, I also get texts from the Dem Governors Association, the Dem Senate Campaign Committee and various candidates.
And this is on top of these endless emails.
But the texts seems more invasive because they pop up along with personal messages from family and friends.

(25,068 posts)Enough people. When will these people who run these things realize that a significant portion of people don't want these notices/texts?
It's kind of insulting if you ask me. It's their attitude that 'oh, they won't mind the texts, etc.' that will go on for literally forever. No wonder no one wants to deal w/ these entities.

(20,879 posts)I think this kind of thing contributed to Beto O'Roarke's losses in Texas. His campaign sent out constant, relentless texts and emails multiple times per day, and we didn't live in Texas. Even if you strongly support the cause and/or candidate, constant multiple daily texts and emails are incredibly annoying!

Gotta say, its been so long since I made a contribution that its hard to remember. And yet, STILL they come. New ones Ive never heard of - organizations AND campaigns Ive never heard from. But I think thats just one more reason NOT to respond OR donate, PERIOD. Reverse-validation you might call it!
And as soon as I get any beg-mail, I request to be taken off their lists. PERIOD. (What do you think of beg-mail as a term for this?)

ActBlue, the online fund-raising organization that powers Democratic candidates, has plunged into turmoil, with at least seven senior officials resigning late last month and a remaining lawyer suggesting he faced internal retaliation. The departures from ActBlue, which helps raise money for Democrats running for office at all levels of government, come as the group is under investigation by congressional Republicans. They have advanced legislation that some Democrats warn could be used to debilitate what is the partys leading fund-raising operation. The exodus has set off deep concerns about ActBlues future. Last week, two unions representing the groups workers sent a blistering letter to ActBlues board of directors that listed the seven officials who had left. The letter described an alarming pattern of departures that was eroding our confidence in the stability of the organization.
What prompted so many longtime ActBlue officials to leave is not clear none of the former officials agreed to be interviewed on the record. Like many organizations, as we undergo some transition heading into this new election cycle, we are focused on ensuring we have a strong team in place, said Megan Hughes, an ActBlue spokeswoman. We greatly appreciate the contributions of our incredible team members and remain deeply committed to the success of our organization and our mission to enable grass-roots supporters to make their voices heard. According to the letter from the ActBlue unions, which has not been previously reported and was confirmed as authentic by three people briefed on its contents, the senior staff departures began on Feb. 21.
That day, ActBlues customer service and partnerships directors, who had both worked at the group for more than a decade, left, according to the unions letter. Now, my primary mission is rest, Alyssa Twomey, ActBlues departing vice president for customer service, wrote on social media. After 14+ years of living and breathing all things ActBlue, its time for a reset. Im taking an intentional pause before setting course for my next adventure. The next week, several other senior officials left, including the associate general counsel who was the highest-ranking legal officer at ActBlue the assistant research director, a human resources official, the chief revenue officer and an engineer who had spent 16 years building and maintaining the electronic pipes through which the groups donations flow.
As these people left, Zain Ahmad, who was the last remaining lawyer in the ActBlue general counsels office, wrote in an internal Slack message on Feb. 26 that his access to email and other internal platforms had been cut off and that other messages he had posted in Slack had been deleted, according to a screenshot obtained by The New York Times. Mr. Ahmad is now on leave from ActBlue, according to a person briefed on the groups staffing. Please be advised that we have Anti-Retaliation and Whistleblower Policies for a reason, Mr. Ahmad wrote. The unions letter to the ActBlue board called Mr. Ahmads assertions on ActBlues Slack platform unsettling and disturbing, and part of a growing pattern of volatility and toxicity stemming from current leadership.

(1,422 posts)I donated to a lot of races and groups both locally and nationally leading up to November. I was very careful in who I chose to donate to, and almost all were through ActBlue. But it got me onto lists that seem to be shared and multiplied.
I stop two texts and get 4 more. Same with opting out of emails. Ive gotten hundreds of texts and emails in the past month from all sorts of entities that are new to me. Is there any way to get my phone and email removed from the source?
And I get additional texts naming someone who had my phone number before I got it, at least 20 years ago!
I think STOP just alerts them to the fact it is an active phone.

(149,994 posts)It almost seems that way.
They have "the lists" and every candidate running for something anywhere in the U.S., manages to get a copy, and will send out requests. And it is more frantic at this time of the month because it is as an "end of month" and/or "end of quarter" deadline or whatever.
For both email and texts, anything that has the words "BEGGING", "PLEADING", "IMPLORING", "SECOND REQUEST" (or "THIRD" ), gets the spam filter treatment and a "STOP" for the texts.
I have definitely supported many candidates outside of my state but right now, I am trying to store away some $$$ ahead of whatever catastrophic economic Depression and/or a Muskrat screw-up of the federal annuities and/or SS (resulting in missing deposits) that will
probably be happening.

So THAT tells me there are lists being built, and passed around. (Never got anything here, but your luck may be better.)
I too find it infuriating and I think it backfires - when you're constantly harassed you start tuning out.

(85,683 posts)Because if they're worth your caring-about, then they're probably still worthy of support.
It's the "me-too's" that make me crazy! Problem is, it's just another way to raise money: selling your lists to other fund-raisers. Seems to me the only thing we individuals can do is stay aware, AND focused ONLY on the worthy ones if possible.

They don't spam unnecessarily and don't sell your info to related groups.
The site is set up to highlight close races in need of a little push, but you can search for individual races if you prefer.

(613 posts)I recognize some of those. democracyfirstpac are the absolute worst. I just try to reply with STOP to all this crap. Pretty sure the issue is that someone like ActBlue (not saying it's them, but some outfit like that) gives all these other outfits your phone number when you use their platform to make donations.

I got mad and I have not donated to anyone since. There has to be a better way. I'd donate again, but I expect more of the same. There needs to be some kind of checkbox to NEVER bother me, I'll donate again, just leave me the Fuck alone.

(1,053 posts)Its the freaking EMAILS! You make the mistake of signing one petition and suddenly, the DNC has shared your email addy with EVERY Dem in the country. Im sick of the begging. Bad enough its from Florida politicians but I get them from EVERY STATE, right down to local races! They all want whatever you can give!
Hello
Im in Florida. The cost of living here is ridiculous and I havent seen a real raise in over three years. My son lost his job thanks to two major hurricanes and is having trouble even finding jobs to apply toespecially since Milton crushed his car and insurance wouldnt cover it and FEMA is still pondering it
My car has been out of action since Helene and Im barely getting by on the freaking bus. Factor in that my ex stiffed me on 17 of the 20 years of alimony he was ordered to pay and I lost my house and cant afford a lawyer to go after him for recompense.
How about YOU send ME moneyor at least do your job so that we dont wind up on the streets wondering how well survive at all? No one is representing us. I cant afford to send a single $5 donation to a local politician, let alone $5 to hundreds and hundreds of politicians wholl never impact our lives here. Even Bernie and AOC and now Katie Porter send me MULTIPLE emails daily, begging for dollars.
Its depressing. These people represent a giant sucking hole that will never be satisfied, promising that if we help them win, well all be better off.
I havent been better off in YEARS. How about you do something that will impact our lives? Maybe you all send ME $5 so we can eat this month. The house we rented for almost 8 years has been sold out from under us and were barely making it since we had to move in October, and itd be thrilling to be able to do a legit grocery trip and eat something besides granola and frozen burritos because thats all my son can carry on his bike, which he rides WITH ONE LEG.
I just deleted over 80 emailsafter deleting 40-some on my lunch break. Im getting sick of having to send these to the junk folder because the DNC continues to share my contact info with EVERYONE (no doubt charging them for the favour). At least texts can be stopped by simply replying STOP!

How the fuck-all did Lynn Cheney get my damn number??? How the hell did AIPAC????
Worse, you tell them to Stop and it continues, often with new names.
EVERY FUCKING DAY I get them. I even recall the first one I got asking for MORE money, came less than a month after the 2024 election. And I dont even live in the same damn state as the candidate!!!
THIS has become A SCAM!

(6,153 posts)They sell our information to campaigns, PACs, and others who try to sabotage the fund-raising efforts of Democrats.
As a result, we get countless texts and emails. For me, this has disrupted my business, as I have to spend inordinate amounts of time to clear my messages and emails and have sometimes accidentally deleted some of my business-related messages and emails.
I also read that "bad actors" use these messages to divert money from unsuspecting donors who think they're donating to Democrat candidates, but the money never reaches them. Especially suspect are the messages promising several times matching of one's donation.
It is very discouraging, and I have not tipped Act Blue for the entire 2024 campaign or since, as my own protest....

(61 posts)It should not take all this beg-mail to get somebody elected and we sure can't go head to head with Elon Musk. And why does it take 4 years of fund-raising to elect the next president? Limits, maybe? We're expected to give give give all the time. It goes to trash with me.

I will not use Act Blue, although I realize it serves a purpose. For people making modest contributions, and checks are not a convenient option, it makes sense. But years ago, they would automatically check the make it monthly box without my consent, and called me an idiot for asking them to stop. Plus, they, together with their credit card partners, take about 8% out of all contributions to divide among themselves. If some tight race is costing $10 million, our candidate cant afford to give up $800,000 for Visa and Act Blue to play with. I ALWAYS send checks.
I also get the barrage of pushy, offensive emails. I even got one from some telemarketer claiming to be raising money for Gabby Giffords and her gun control PAC. I said that Gabby and Mark have my email and my phone numbers, so they can call me any time they like. I havent heard back from that one yet 😛
