At my work advice column Ask a Manager, I regularly hear accounts of out-of-touch executives who have alienated large portions of their workforce via clueless displays of wealth at the exact same time that theyre laying off employees, increasing health insurance costs, or otherwise squeezing their workers. To wit:
My spouses large, local employer was failing, pretty spectacularly. Many, many people in the community had purchased stock (and were watching the stock prices tumble). During the week of another round of layoffs, the relatively new CEO had her brand-new luxury vehicle delivered to the main office (which was nearly all windows). It was unloaded right out front in the fire lane, while employees watched.
Years ago, our director started our department meeting by talking about his vacation, how nice his vacation home is, blah, blah, blah. On the same day, I was notified that my pay was cut 30 percent and others were laid off.

(67,214 posts)They see themselves as so brilliant, talented, elevated above the common man.
Of course all the money in the world belongs to them.
And they don't want to share it.
I live in a neighborhood where there are a lot of really rich people (I am not rich). Like summering in the Hamptons, owning many homes, and having private jets sort of generational wealth.
I remember a party I went to quite a number of years back. The host of the party was quite drunk, and said something about being a part of the 1% and wanting to stay a part of the 1% (which frankly he would
because generational wealth
his family has buildings named after them and they really do summer in the Hamptons.)
I realized then that no amount of money was enough for a rich guy like that. It would never be enough. I even saw that trait in a wealthy Democrat that lived here. It was never enough.

(67,214 posts)There is never enough money to fill the holes in their soul.
They will destroy the entire planet and the humans on it to get their fix.
Money and power is the only thing that they think will make them happy.
But it is never enough.

(297 posts)These fools humble bragging about their lifestyle, being conspicuous with their wealth, or being inconsiderate of others are acting like trash.
They are obsessed with wealth because they know without it they are just crude white trash. Generational wealth is just inbred white trash.
Our local gracious, kind, polite, and poor Venezuelans, Haitians, and Guatemalans are better than any rich white people.
