Matthew Yglesias: There are lots of different ways that tariffs could play out. Some of those ways could lead to large increases in consumer prices and some have smaller or near-zero price effects. But to the extent that tariffs successfully protect high-wage American jobs or drive new investment in creating such jobs, the mechanism through which they succeed is higher prices.
If the prices dont go up, then the things that Trump is touting as the benefits of tariffs also dont happen.

Trump wants to raise money for tax cuts for the rich with these tariffs. Everyday Americans will pay for the tariffs . So it is a tax on regular Americans to provide more $$$ for the oligarchs.

(20,834 posts)which products or companies get tariffed then he may be able to pick "winners" and "losers."
The tariff thing kinda reminds me of WMD. Serious military or trade problems don't just pop up overnight out of nowhere. There's usually a lead-in that the media report on and warn about. WMD popped up out of nowhere (likely to justify starting a war) and was later investigated and proven false, that Iraq had had no WMD since at least 1991. Now tariffs have also magically appeared out of nowhere to be a solution without a problem. Years ago TSF probably imagined that tariffs are an easy way to tax other countries. He still seems to believe that.

(36,182 posts)It makes the American product less expensive and drives consumer choice. Or it's supposed to.
Why buy a $20 Bordeaux (that used to be $10) when there's a sub-par $10 Central Valley Cab Sav?
