To defend Trumps third term ambitions, the GOP keeps pointing to polls, which are a) irrelevant, and b) less impressive than they claim.

When Donald Trump told NBC News over the weekend that hes serious about pursuing a third term the plain language of the U.S. Constitution notwithstanding the president suggested to Kristen Welker that his public support was helping shape his perspective:
As this week got underway, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt appeared on Fox News and endorsed Trumps line, arguing that the American people love the job this president is doing.....
By any objective measure, Trump simply isnt especially popular right now. He can either a) not care; or b) take steps to improve his standing. Instead, the president is choosing to c) make stuff up, which probably wont help.
As for why you should care about the polls measuring the popularity of an incumbent who cant run again, its worth re-emphasizing that the White House needs people to believe this weird lie. As weve discussed, members of Congress who, unlike the incumbent president, have to worry about re-election care a great deal about the prevailing political winds.
If the public really were rallying behind Trump and he really did enjoy 70% support, Republican lawmakers might be that much more inclined to follow his lead, while Democratic lawmakers in competitive districts would be that much less inclined to put up a fight against the White House agenda.
But with Americans expressing their dissatisfaction with Trump, it effectively creates a permission structure for Congress to defy the presidents wishes. In other words, the more voters turn against Trump, the harder it becomes for him to get his way, and the greater his need to make up approval ratings that dont exist, hoping people will fall for the transparent con.
You have to start by saying, I have the highest poll numbers of any Republican for the last 100 years. Were in the high 70s in many polls, in the real polls, and you see that. And, and you know, were very popular. And you know, a lot of people would like me to [seek a third term].

This site tracks all Presidential approval polls. They generally only include those polls that meet their criteria for reliability, but they include all of them on their website.
The highest approval rating for Trump in any poll since the inauguration was just 57% from RMG Research (Rasmussen) on 1-23-25, three days after the inauguration.
The highest in the past month was 54%, also from RMG Research on 3-13-25.
The highest in the past month from anyone other than Rasmussen was 51% from Public Opinion Strategies on 3-2-25. In fact that was the one and only non-Rasmussen poll to have Trump's approval above 50% in the past month.
Even the most favorable recent non-Rasmussen polls, show Trump's approval only in the low to mid-80's amongst just Republicans. I have no idea who he thinks is showing him with a high 70%+ approval rating, but it is nobody who exists in the real world.

(23,172 posts)2. The poll I saw today had him at 49%
And that poll had a non-believable 79% disapproval rating for democrats. There is no way 1/5 democrats approve of what is going on. Most polls have Trump in the 90+% disapproval. In other words, his best polling numbers are awful.
It is essentially just his Teflon abilities among his base keeping him afloat.
