2. My maternal grandparents both came through Ellis Island in 1912 from occupied Poland seeking asylum

And the Statue of Liberty was the first thing that greeted them in their new country. My grandfather went on to fight for his new country in WWI.

It's beyond me what they all would think now, they all found opportunities here that were denied to them at home. My cousin is actually thinking of seeking asylum back in Ireland to give her 2 young girls more freedoms that they would now find here.

6. It's totally unprecedented that those who had family members who sought refuge here are looking for refuge elsewhere

And I'm one generation too late to consider it myself. And I always felt extremely fortunate to have been born here, thanks to my ancestors. My paternal grandmother's ancestors were Dutch and settled here in the mid 1600s and their descendants fought in the American Revolution. What would they think now?? Love ya back...

"As a noun, "asylum" can refer to protection granted by a government to someone who has left their country, usually for political reasons, or, in a historical context, a hospital for people with mental illnesses".

The Funny Farm has a reservation for me and it's going to be used sooner than later.
