Why are GOP Senators so surprised by Trump's corruption?

Elect a criminal and give him immunity while in office, they should have expected criming along with the strong incentive to never leave office.

To be a member of the GOP the concept of having a moral boundary is anathema to what they are all about so not being corrupt would disqualify anyone that wanted to join.
