A new poll finds American pride is at an all-time low ahead of Fourth of July.
Since January 2001, the polling firm has asked Americans whether they are proud to be an American, and this years resultspublished with the Fourth of July on the horizon and the semiquincentennial a year awayhave proven to be the most dismal on record.
Only 41 percent of American adults reported being extremely proud to be an American, and only 17 percent were very proud, according to Gallup. Twenty percent find themselves on the less-proud portion of the spectrum, saying they are moderately, only a little, or not at all proud (19, 11, and nine percent, respectively).
Independents pridewhich has steadily declined since 2001is also lower than ever, with just 53 percent being very or extremely proud.
Meanwhile, Republicans, 92 percent of whom are very or extremely proud, are as chipper as ever. Members of the GOP have consistently floated around that figure, only dipping below the 90 percent mark in 2016 and 20202024.

The only word that explains the administration's venal behavior, bad judgement, and magical thinking is stupidity.
Stupidity was defined in a paper by Dietrich Bonhoffer. The gist is that anyone who continues pushing an idea after the idea has been soundly debunked can be called stupid.

We were the oldest, most successful democracy in the world.
The greatest economy and military in the world.
Greatest science powerhouse.
We had many flaws but some things to be proud of.
And it felt like we were moving in the right direction.
Women's rights, civil rights, ecology, climate change, etc.
Now all of that is gone.
take generations to get back what we had or will it change for the better, when We the People do NOT do this

(23,113 posts)I am proud that i am an American in the sense that I feel I do my part to contribute to the whole, and make it a better place.
But I am downright ashamed to be FROM this country now, and i would never admit i was from here if i was traveling abroad.

Doesn't everybody like to make a little noise?

(125,564 posts)many who experience PTSD. We will not be making a lot of noise, at least not the kind you seem to be indicating.

(15,559 posts)Aside from the fire danger of living in a national forest, it definitely triggers my PTSD. And then I feel so bad because why would we celebrate bombs going off when bombs are dropping on innocent people all over the world?

(1,777 posts)I hate loud noises. My hubby has cancer. If you beat cancer, there is a gong in the waiting room. People who are cured go up to it and bang it hard. Everyone is so excited and they clap. Good for them. Sometimes they bang it with no warning. Not that they ever announce they are going to do it, but some stand around the gong, asking their friends if they are ready for it/to take a pic/ or something like that. I sit with my hands over my ears and sometimes I cry. I hate that damn gong.
niyad
(125,564 posts)A friend who was in treatment for colon cancer told me about the gong thing, all I could think was how upsetting it must be for many people.

(1,777 posts)I am happy I can experience such things. The prognosis, for his cancer, is in terms of weeks, maybe months. In August, it will be two years! I would not know about the gong, if he was not a fighter. Experiencing it means he is alive. I would go through that everyday, if it means he is here with me. Fuck cancer.

(3,542 posts)So pride doesnt really enter into the equation for me.
Besides the criteria is something different for everyone
proud to be American because you lost a relative in WW2? youre an immigrant success story ? you feel strongly on the foundational stuff like the constitution? the breakaway from monarchy?
It could just as easily be hyper-partisan fluidity, when youre proud when your sides in power and less so when the other side is.
Pretty moot, in my opinion.

(15,595 posts)But, since I was born in the USA, raised, educated there, and still have most of my family living there - even after living in Europe for nearly 31 years now - I still never deny that I am a US citizen.
I worked for my country as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the 1960s, when liberalism was in full flower. I also worked for my country with the US State Department when that was still a proud and functional agency. In between, I also worked for my country as a public school teacher for several years.
Through all those experiences, I was able to end my professional career working with international agencies in Geneva, where I was but one among many nationalities from around the world. I learned firsthand how we are ALL MUCH MORE ALIKE than we are different
I will NEVER change my mind about that, no matter what national label is affixed on anyone.
While I am completely ashamed by what the political environment in the USA has become and, as a result, wish never to live there again full-time, I will not deny an essential part of my being simply because some of the worst people in the world are currently running the show.
Besides, I still want the country of my birth to become a place where my children and grandchildren - along with all others - can live up to their potential.
