Perhaps this is a new phenomenon. It certainly feels like it...This notion of being outraged or upset that someone else is not equally outraged or upset about that which the first person is outraged or upset about. I don't know where this comes from. Perhaps it's a generational thing.
When I was in college, there were numerous issues about which people felt extremely passionate. At the time, the typical thing to do was to seek out and join a student group that put you in touch with other people who felt equally passionate about your chosen issue or issues. Nobody felt pressured. Nobody proselytized. The scene was essentially - be outraged and let be outraged. You do your thing and I'll do mine. And, that's how we all co-existed.
Are people now simply so self-isolated in their little internet bubbles that they are failing to actively seek out real life contact with people who share their views? Because, if that's the case, then it seems to me that the outrage isn't really that their aren't people who share your views, but rather that you're simply not making an effort to go out there and find them.

(126,094 posts)and before long it gets hijacked by someone complaining about some other transgression that isn't being addressed, with accusations that people are being distracted from transgression B by focusing on transgression A. Express outrage about (lately, for example) the Epstein files, and someone will gripe about Gaza being ignored, or gerrymandering, or deportations, or whatever. The thing is, there's plenty of outrage to go around, and nobody can deal with all of it all the time, which doesn't mean we don't care about the outrages we're not talking about at this moment! It only means that we're outraged about this one other thing right now.
