General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI am visiting Washington DC, arrived yesterday and visited a few museums, today I went to the Capitol
and visited the House of Representatives, the Rotunda, and Crypt and well as the Library of Congress.
I had a profound sense of reverence for what these institutions stand for.
We are fortunate to have our form of government, that it has prevailed for only 200 odd years.
I'll be damned if this Orange Shit Gibbon and his lackys ruin this Great Experiment.
That is all.

(14,466 posts)Id like to believe. I guess the midterms will be the next real test. But I think we need to be preparing ourselves for a whole lot of darkness. Another year and a half with no meaningful opposition to consolidate power, and the budget to have ICE thugs anywhere they need to be to ensure elections turn out the way dear leader wants them too.

(14,466 posts)But the evidence on the ground is not adding up to anything positive, so far. I see full capture of all facets of all three branches of government, plus full capture of the 4th estate, combined with a budget that provides a private army and concentration camps.
I dont see a way out. I see people preparing escape routes and others rationalizing why each step is not really that bad.

(44,976 posts)We just got home after 3 weeks there. Love the place - and flipped the bird at the WH when we passed it.

(5,822 posts)Once Democrats win the House and Senate at the mid-terms, it's a loooong wait for sure, I plan to visit DC.

But its a great place to visit. Lots of free museums and monuments and the Metro is great.

Try to get to the National Archives. Dont miss Magna Carta, which is not in the Rotunda of that building.
Pro tip: at 3:30, head to the Botanic Garden. Make that your last visit of the day.
You'll see.

(2,776 posts)I was born in Washington DC 1950. I would recommend seeing the National Zoo in Rock Creek Park, free I thinks, beware parking fee was $25 last I went couple years back, an all day metro pass might be better, tho nearby road parking is free if you can find a space, and read parking warnings carefully.
Then I would suggest the National Art Gallery, free, cross the mall from the smithsonian museum. Recommend seeing Thomas Cole painting done 1840 'the voyage of life', you can preview it, link below, I hope. Art Gallery frequently hosts a known painters actual paintings on loan, if you go let me know who this time. I saw Cezanne once.

Then I would suggest seeing the African American museum, free, near the Art Gallery, but this requires a reservation made in advance so visit or call, unless there is a military veteran with you, they should allow all members in his/her party in immediately without reservation, no pun intended.
The Af Am museum's bottom floor configures a ships below decks where slaves would be kept as they voyaged from Africa. Interesting and informative 4 or 5 stories. Fairly new.
Georgetown also interesting.
I used to just ride the metro to different lines limits and back for a quick tour. You see a lot of inner city with much different aspect from the refined mall. Hate to say it, but best not to debark in some places, especially after dark.

(22,676 posts)A money issue.
I've visited around ?20 times. About half for pure fun, and half for demonstrations, and marches.
I love The National Mall. Seen The Museum of Natural History, American History, National Art Gallery, Air and Space, Original Smithstnion Building, Native American, African, Library of Congress, National Archives.
Lincoln Memorial (including once at midnight), Vietnam Memorial, FDR, Dr King, Washington, The Capitol, White House (once in the summer, and around Xmas when The Clinton's had the American Crafts exhibition on the Holiday Trees - wonderful!)
I feel the most patriotic visiting there.
If I can get back there I definitely want to see the African-American Museum. I was following it's progress being built on line.
I stayed overnight in Georgetown via a cousin's wife's mom (a sweet gesture) for the Clinton's Crafts display. It was snowing when I woke up, instead of starting a few hours later.
I walked about 1/3 mile to the bus. On my way I passed a Magnolia Tree with it's leaves on! I had no idea it was an evergreen.
Keep enjoying your visit!

(36,978 posts)At this point, I am so profoundly cynical about this nation I'll just be angry or sad the entire time.
I'd rather spend my vacations in what remains of America's natural splendor.
