Late July's oppressive heat forecast isn't normal

As the clock ticks down the final days of July, thermometers will climb across much of the eastern half of the United States, creating a dangerous and long-lasting heat wave that will put millions at risk of heat stroke and other illnesses.

Those in the path of the heat wave should plan to take extra measures to stay cool through at least July 30. Keep things chill by staying in air-conditioned spaces, visit friends with pools, pile up the popsicles and lemonade and pull out the recipe for your favorite cold summer salad.

"We've always had heat waves," said Max Holmes, president and CEO of the Woodwell Climate Research Center in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. "But it's happening a lot more, with greater intensity, greater duration and greater frequency."

"This is exactly what we expected to happen," Holmes said. "As the earth gets warmer, we see more extremes and it's the extremes that get us. They kill us. They make us sick."

We camped out in my partially finished basement last year, mostly, but I think I have a mold problem that I'm still dealing with. So, back upstairs to the bedroom with a single portable A/C, supplemented with fans and insulated blackout curtains on the big west-facing window, I can keep her happy. Meanwhile, I venture throughout the rest of the house to get a few things done, but given I refuse to cool with ultra-expensive central air this year, we are coping. Two straight days of 100°F are on the way. Yuck, but I will be working, so only the hot hot hot drives to and from to deal with.

AC of any kind makes me feel lethargic and generally crappy, so this is not a happy time. But the pre-dawn walks are generally fairly cool and keep me sane.

That said, I would be scum not to be thinking of the elderly--especially in high-rise apartments or other settings without air conditioning and the homeless throughout the country, and for me, all the desperate animals poorly cared for. May there be locals who care for them all.

And, the awful wildfires...
