During the years of the Red Scare

They did try to tell us it could happen here. In 9th grade Civics class we had to read Masters of Deceit by J. Edgar Hoover. It was about how 'they' could easily change the rules where people weren't really paying attention so that the totalitarians could come to power. At school boards, city councils, etc. All levels of governance. I believed it then, and so I'm not terribly surprised now. What I didn't foresee (and what Hoover didn't) was the blatant complicity of the Supreme Court and partisan Congress. That's why and how it happened so sickeningly fast. No one could have imagined these people would be so eager to betray the nation to please a conman, a rapist, and a traitor.
