which are much closer to the quake center. Meanwhile the state is going thru its emergency plans
The much bigger Japan event in 2011 cause some moderate tsunami damage in a few areas of Hawaii and earlier tsunamis have caused the most damage in Hilo due to its location and topography.
Nice to know the warning system is working properly. and if you are on the beach or in a harbor its better to be safe than sorry.
Fortunately the time of the event is evening/sunset so it's not the middle of the night

(14,442 posts)So distance doesn't really mean much, it's the wave seiching or as we called it in the bathtub "the slosh factors" and the lay of the land from the direct the wave originated from that determines how bad a tsunami will be.
The wave will be radiating from the Northwest when it hits. The big cities will probably be spared, but from what I remember, there's a lot of poorer rural and indigenous communities on that side of the island chain.
