After Years of Scandal and Drama in Oklahoma, Ryan Walters Sets His Sights on "Destroying" Teachers Unions

After Years of Scandal and Drama in Oklahoma, Ryan Walters Sets His Sights on “Destroying” Teachers Unions

Seated on stage as a panelist at the 2025 Moms for Liberty National Summit, right-wing education evangelist Ryan Walters addressed the crowd in Orlando earlier this month.

The event was Walters’ first public appearance as chief executive officer of the nonprofit Teacher Freedom Alliance (TFA), a new organization launched in March as “an alternative for pro-America educators who seek to restore traditional values in the classroom” and educate students ”free from political influence and union control,” as the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) reported. It’s a role he stepped into after abruptly announcing his resignation as state superintendent in a September 24 interview on Fox News @Night.

“We’re gonna destroy the teachers unions,” Walters vowed on Fox. “We have seen the teachers unions use money and power to corrupt our schools, to undermine our schools. We are one of the biggest grassroots organizations in the country. We will build an army of teachers to defeat the teachers unions once and for all. So this fight is going national and we will get our schools back on track. We will not allow any further union control.”

Shortly after the announcement, Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond, a fellow Republican, summarized Walters’ tenure in Oklahoma by noting that ever since Governor Stitt (R) appointed him as secretary of education in 2020, “we have witnessed a stream of neverending scandal and political drama…The Stitt-Walters era has been an embarrassment to our state,” the attorney general said in a press statement.
