Bilionaire Tom Steyer declares run for California governor

Tom Steyer, the billionaire environmental activist who spent millions of his own money in advertising to help propel the passage of California's Proposition 50, is now throwing his name into an already crowded race for governor in 2026.

Steyer announced he's running for governor on Nov. 19 in a YouTube video, seeking to replace current Gov. Gavin Newsom, whose second and final term due to state term limits ends in January 2027. A Democrat, Steyer is no stranger to politics, having run as a long-shot 2020 Democratic presidential candidate.

He said his key goals as California governor would be to make the nation's most populous state more affordable. Some of his initiatives include lowering electric bills by 25% and letting residents choose their own electricity provider. He wants to build one million new homes within four years by accelerating permitting, reducing taxes and building fees, and using technology to lower construction costs.

Less likely to scam and grift to fill their pockets. No contracts to their family members, no bags of cash going out the door

But I'd want my billionaire candidate to prove s/he grew up in extreme wealth, a few generations removed from the scamming criminal who established the dynasty

I didn't know that was his focus. Maybe as a billionaire he could volunteer to help pay it for us California residents.

I’m still skeptical of a billionaire running on this agenda. It just doesn’t feel relatable. But I’ll keep an open mind.

... when he's a progressive himself and has actually put his money where his mouth is by founding NextGen America -- if you know, you know -- and funding other progressive initiatives involving climate change, healthcare, education, etc.

Fetterman immediately comes to mind, except Steyer actually has progressive credentials and accomplishments whereas Fetterman just seemed to support a particular person in a primary that later supported him back...

Out with one unified purpose and one single goal with no deviation.

Maybe most of them are nasty Republicans, but some are definitely on our side. The only two billionaires I ever met, a hedge fund manager in Dallas, and CNN founder Ted Turner, were definitely and actively on our side. Any who would lump them in together with Bezos and Musk would lump AOC together with Lauren Boebert.

is he hasn't held public office before and while he might have the right positions on issues and the right intentions he might not have the political experience to deal with the "politics" of things. I would prefer he try for lower office first.

Governor of California is a huge job . We saw what happened with Arnold.
