House votes 285-98 to denounce 'horrors' of socialism ahead of Mamdani-Trump meeting

https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2025/11/21/congress/house-denounces-horrors-of-socialism-00664412

The House voted 285-98 to approve a resolution condemning the “horrors of socialism” Friday morning, just hours before President Donald Trump is set to meet with New York’s incoming democratic socialist mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Eighty-six Democrats joined with Republicans to approve the measure. Two others voted present. No Republican voted to oppose it.

(snip)

The debate over the symbolic measure was derailed for about 10 minutes after Rep. Maria Salazar (R-Fla.) verbally attacked Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) on the floor, accusing her of being a “friend” of the late Cuban dictator Fidel Castro despite traveling to the country and seeing the abuses of his regime.

Waters asked for Salazar’s words to be taken down, but Salazer instead withdrew her remarks, allowing the debate to continue.

Show up in the nicest families!

Education and a sense of humor can help, but childhood trauma, cosmic rays, and etc. can trigger cerebral failure with little warning, in my experience.

I'm a socialist, if I'm anything. Oh, the "horror" of policy to improve the lives of everyone rather than mandating that the rest of us give everything for the rich and their profits!

The 6+million reliably Democratic voters who voted Biden, but sat out Harris

Yeah, this was probably what they wanted - denouncing "socialism." Clever strategy, denouncing socialism while people are moving towards it.

There's a vast difference between Communism/Socialism and Democratic Socialism. Notice how the word "Democratic" was left out of the resolution.

Why in God's name would any Democratic Representative vote for this when they have to know it's pure propaganda to damn Mamdani's visit today. And no, I do not think Mamdani wants to turn NYC into Cuba.

They advocate for a capitalistic economic system with strong social programs. Those attacking Bernie and Mandami know this but think it serves their purpose to accuse them anyway.

I find it bewildering that Democratic representatives feel so compelled to be support this farce.

For context, remember that over 80% of Americans do not understand what is meant by the term "Democratic Socialism"
