Mamdani: I've spoken about --

Trump: Just say yes, it's easier than explaining.

He rarely displays intelligent, well-timed humor.

And it was a STUPID gotcha question from the reporter

I probably would have said something like:

The global risk of fascism is something that every free person everywhere should be concerned about. People tend to throw around some of these terms, like kids calling names in the schoolyard. But fascism is a very specific thing the world has seen over and over in the past century or so. That is a bigger subject than today's meeting, but I suggest people do a Google search for "The 14 defining characteristics of fascism".

The President is just one person, a person in a very important position, but just one person. Fascism requires a very organized effort in all 14 of these areas. And if one does an honest assessment, I think they must conclude that we are certainly at risk in all 14 of those areas.

I am not accusing the President of organizing these trends toward fascism, but it is happening, and I hope the President will join all of us who are Anti-Fascism to turn back these trends in the USA and elsewhere.

Which is what I mean. He's rarely able to do something that subtle, without barking or screaming Piggy! at someone.

He likes Mamdani right now, because Mamdani is a WINNER !! Trump loves winners.

Next month he'll be saying the guy should be deported

9. Trump did seem to crack a joke, even if by accident

Mamdani decided to let it go at that, because he had already won the day, bigly. It was probably wise of him to let the press conference conclude with Trump fawning over the very strong new Mayor-elect.

But I do think all Dems should adopt the kind of response I drafted above. It is probably not productive to call Trump a fascist because that means all his supporters are also fascists. They are, but it isn't productive to attack that head on.

It is also not acceptable to NOT address the growing fascist. I suggest my prose -- or something like that -- is a good way for every Dem politician to speak to this issue -- educating the public and the media, while simultaneously putting the fascists on notice that we see them and aren't going to yield an inch.

And above all, OWN the term Anti-Fascist. Don't run from it. Anti-fascism is a good thing, the cause of a lifetime.
