How I think of Christmas



The juxtaposition in this music of arguably the most beautiful song ever written against a backdrop of the greatest human ugliness--violence, hatred, war--is jarring to the conscience.

And finally, there is this:



"We close with Good Night, Good Luck, a Merry Christmas--and God bless all of you on the good earth."

He’d had a lung removed in November, and that would be his last Christmas. I was 14.

It's very difficult to lose a parent at any age, but losing one in your formative years is an order of magnitude more so. I hope you have many fond memories of him.
