This same thing, though far less intense, came up in Obama's first term and some on the right blamed him for not supporting the protesters. The reason given was that foreign outsiders, especially the US or Israel, supporting the protesters would be used to discredit the protesters and rally others behind the leader.

One other thing to remember is that the son of the Shah likely has not been in Iran since Jimmy Carter was President. Iran is currently under a very repressive government, but the Shah is also remembered as repressive. In fact, many in the protests that led to his fall were young people wanting a democracy. Is his association with the protests a positive?
