General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDemocratic Underground is 25 years old today
Many of you already know the story of how this site got started: following the (s)election of George W. Bush in 2000, two twenty-something liberal web designers, angry at the outcome, and aghast that there didn't seem to be any competition to right-wing web communities like Free Republic at the time, threw together a site and promoted it by waving a hand-painted DEMOCRATICUNDERGROUND.COM banner at Bush's inauguration in DC on January 20th, 2001. The rest is now quite literally history.
Unfortunately I don't have a copy of what the site looked like on launch day, but this is pretty close -- below is a screenshot of the DU homepage from February 19, 2001, just under a month after we launched. If you want to know how times have changed, note that at the bottom of the page, we offered people the option to contact us by fax

At launch DU was intended to be more of an article-driven site than a web community. This was before the age of blogs, so one draw of the site was that we would publish articles by regular people who couldn't get published by mainstream media. It's hard to believe now, but at the time this was somewhat revolutionary.
The discussion forum was initially an afterthought. We tacked it on at the last minute, having never operated or even given much thought to running such a thing, and it quickly became apparent that it was going to take up more of our time than we realized -- mainly because the forum was immediately flooded with freepers and trolls, and at launch the forum software didn't even have the ability to ban people.
Over the years, as blogs and then social media became widespread, the need to provide a space for liberal authors to get published waned, and DU's discussion forum community essentially overtook the entire site.
I'm not sure how many websites there are out there that have been in continuous existence for 25 years, but I suspect the number is not enormous. I believe that DU is still here because after all this time, there still isn't anything exactly like it on the Internet. We wanted to create a place where people from the center to the left can have civil discussions, free from right-wing trolls and disruptors. And we still strive for that goal every day, thanks to the efforts of DUers serving on Juries and as Hosts, taking part in MIRT, and -- most importantly -- simply posting in a civil manner, with the intent of having a good conversation.
And really, that is why DU is still going strong after a quarter century -- because of all of you, and the community that you have created here. We built it, and you came -- and you keep coming back, after all these years.
DU would not exist without all of you. So thank you for being here, no matter how long you've been here.

(43,342 posts)Thank you, EarlG for giving us this space (not forgetting joint founders Elad and Skinner and all the mods, etc who have helped keep this place going). It's almost hard to remember all the needs this place has served--although I'll never forget the lifeline this was on 9/11 when so many other news sources failed us.
I came here for the articles (especially the Conservative Idiots) and stayed for the discussions. I helped host the Lounge back in the day, ran the Stock Market thread for a while and have helped out behind the scenes numerous times. Lately, real life has led me to post and interact much less frequently, but there is always a DU tab open on my computer and a link on my phone. Even my Bluesky account name links back here.

(1,332 posts)I was completely devastated when Bush "won" the election back then and happened upon Democratic Underground and joined up. It was a great source of comfort, information, and support back then, and continues to be to this day. When I think about that time and then I think about where we are today, it's almost unbearable, but I'm glad I'm a part of such a thoughtful, smart, kind and likeminded group of people. (7,477 posts)I was one who logged on and registered shortly after Bush was elected. A friend turned me on to the site, and I've never left. I took a small hiatus when I lost my login information... and, after reading only for a long time, took the jump and registered anew. I've never regretted it. I remember how bowled over I was when ya'll let me become a Star member when all I had to contribute was $10.00. That just reiterated to me the kind of site I was on... and, with the exception of an infraction or two when my hotheadedness got the better of me, I've loved every minute of being here and hope to be here for many more years.

There is nothing like DU on the internet. Yes, I know we're now mostly an older group. My millennial/zoomer children prefer the hand to hand combat of X, reddit, instagram, discord, and places they aren't mentioning to me. DU meets my needs. It fits like an old pair of sneakers.

(10,759 posts)I had been lurking at Bartcop and saw several mentions of DU there so I decided to try it.
At the time, the only place that I frequented on a regular basis was the talk boards hosted by MSNBC.com, which shut down pretty soon after 9/11 due to the total bedlam caused by right wingers flooding their boards with inflammatory garbage. The idea of a site like DU where right wing trolls would be quickly shown the door was very attractive (and still is).

(60,360 posts)relatively few sites have been around for 25 years. DU has survived the social media platforms, especially Facebook, that wiped out a lot of message boards as people drifted away to sites set up to be addictive.
That survival says so much about you admins and how well you've run this site.
It also says a lot about DUers in general - both the importance of what we talk about here, and the sense of community and caring.
We're so fortunate to have DU.

(3,734 posts)This page kept us sane in 2001 and continues to do so now. It is a sad state of affairs that, in the ensuing years, we have seen moments when this country is in safe hands, doing the work of the people, and then face a nightmare in which the people don't matter at all.
Thank you for the information, the advice, the rants, the calming voices (DemoTex on 9-11, I will never forget his stabilizing presence on this board that day), the amazing members who become pieces of our lives, the fun, and the sorrow. The people on DU have become friends we turn to in good and bad times. I am thankful for all.

(3,741 posts)As a Canadian working in Boston at the time I was absolutely aghast at the outcome of the 2,000 election. I felt like I had just fallen through the looking glass, and there I was in the belly of the beast. Or belly of the beast adjacent, at any rate.
DU was a breath of fresh air that (almost literally) saved my sanity.
Thank God Im back in Canada, but this site is the source for pretty much all the news I allow into my life, since I know there are honest players here who will fact check and present unbiased sources most of the time.
Congrats on 25 years! Lets hope you are still fighting the good fight 25 years from now! 😬

(32,380 posts)I was on the Kerry '04 IRC chat, it was closing down and people wanted to know another place to go. Someone mentioned DU. I lurked for another few years after signing up. I started posting more in 2007, I think.
I'm not as active here as in times past--we've had some sad losses here as the community goes on. I do like to check in every so often, as it is a unique place with special longevity for an internet community.

I can barely remember when that was - 2016 when trump 1 was selected as the president? Anyway it was tough around our that week.
Thanks so much for getting it back up and running and then keeping it running ever since. I believe DU is one of the major players in America's political dialogue.
Also, EarlG, Thanks for your editorial cartoons - usually they are brilliant!

(9,974 posts)I remember way back when. The computer I was using would divide up the page and made it very hard to follow, but I did. I remember sending flowers to Barbara Boxer and again for Nancy Pelosi. I remember Stephan and his colon cancer and how freepers said he was faking to scam us out of money. It's been a long time. I started out as xcajiy and then we could change our names so then I became EC. Now many years later a new name because Iost old name and password.

As a Canadian I don't post that much but do enjoy volunteering for the various 'behind the curtain' duties. DU is my only go-to source for honest, factual info on what's happening down south of me and the only other site I go to for news is Canada's CBC News Site because I trust it as I do DU.
Thanks to EarlG, Elad, Skinner and all the DUers who have made this Canadian feel very welcome, it is much appreciated!

(24,859 posts)There is nothing else like it, that's for sure, and one thing that sets DU far apart is the outstanding discussion forum format and software you have been tweaking since day one.
It's truly unique and works astoundingly well. The only thing I wish had been a part of it was the ability to post pics without having to use a 3rd party hosting site, but I realize that takes a shitload of server ability.
I find it interesting how "Discussionist" came and went, as if the Freepers and MAGATS just can't have nice things! They seemed to throw so much shit against the walls the entire place collapsed. It was a valiant effort, at any rate.
Congrats, You guys. Well done.

Add to DU's accomplishments the way it acted as an information relay on Sept. 11. When all news outlets were clogged because they'd never had that level of traffic before, people could actually get through to DU and get updates people posted as news came in.
And, less pleasantly but still a badge of honor, Putin's monkey-boys felt this was a place to target on election day 2016 and forced a temporary shutdown.

I didn't know about your GWB Inauguration banner!I actually semi-accidently found you guys on line just a few months in; while at a big, and inexpensive Manhattan Internet Cafe!
With GWB in I was looking for Democrats on line, but not an official Dem Party site (don't remember my reasoning).
Your site came up; but without a computer at home, having to hop to multiple libraries to get on-line time bc I had/have many interests, lI forgot to consistently follow you, and I soon forgot.
Fast foward about 20 yrs....
I was disgruntled at the off-topic poltical sub forum on a particular band's music & discussion site for lack of acknowledgement about one of the most seminal tragedies of The 60's on the anniversary there of.
Looking back - the fact that I was about 10 - 15+ years older than many fans on the site made the difference in awareness, and memories!
Sooo, I thought; could there be Democrats out there on line (not a official site [mind you, I've volunteered for several Democratic Presidential campaigns], so I was engaged w the official Party).
Welp....there I was thinking, and....
Suddenly "Democraticunderground": popped up from the Depths of my memories - almost 20 years later!
I joined that very night! 👍
ETA: I was rushing through before my battery charge ended for the moment!
Thank you EarlG, Elad, Skinner, many mods, and many great posters!
Usually here a few times a day, except on my mental health days off 1x, 2x per week.
