'We're not done': Missouri GOP pushes penalties, fetal personhood in renewed abortion fight
Fifteen months after Missouri voters approved a constitutional right to abortion, Republican lawmakers are playing the long game, introducing a flood of familiar legislation seeking to roll back some protections in the hopes of ultimately ending access to the procedure altogether.
Republicans are moving to expand criminal penalties for doctors who perform abortions and civil penalties for those who help obtain medication abortion. Other proposals look to establish personhood for embryos and fetuses or to add instruction on fetal development, as well as abortion, to public school curriculums.
The debate plays out with another statewide vote on abortion set for the November ballot, and as a Jackson County judge weighs which of the states abortion restrictions should remain in place under the abortion-rights amendment approved by voters in 2024.
This type of legislation keeps (abortion) on the front burner, that people are aware in Missouri that we, particularly in the Republican Party, are continuing to fight for life regardless of the outcome of the new Amendment 3, said State Rep. Brian Seitz, a Branson Republican, referencing the November vote on abortion. We will continue to advance protections for the mother and for the infant in the womb. Were not done. This is not the end.
