President Donald Trump on Monday threatened countries around the world to abide by any tariff deals they agreed to, despite the U.S. Supreme Court striking down many of his far-reaching taxes on imports.Any country that wants to play games with the Supreme Court decision, Trump posted, will be met with a much higher Tariff, and worse, than that which they just recently agreed to.
The comment comes after Trump said Saturday that he wants a global tariff of 15%, up from 10% he had announced immediately after the ruling.
The courts decision struck down tariffs Trump had imposed on nearly every country using an emergency powers law. But the Republican president wont let go of his favorite albeit, now more limited tool for rewriting the rules of global commerce and applying international pressure.

There is nothing for them to abide.
What a clueless fool.

(10,807 posts)US Customs collects tariffs. Foreign countries have nothing to do with paying them. Is he saying they should agree to allow US Customs to charge illegal tariffs despite the ruling of the Court that they are illegal?

(76,348 posts)That's exactly what he wants. He doesn't like the decision so, he ignores it.
On top of that, no matter the legal (or illiegality) of the tariffs, other countries don't pay them, collect them, or have anything to do with them. US importers pay those. Then, depending on market segment, 70-94% of thatvcost is passed to the consumer.
No wonder he's convinced this tariffs are a great idea. He has no idea how this all works.

Trump is a master negotiator with declining opinion polls, a sinking economy, and most countries know he will soon Taco as the DOW goes down.

(6,325 posts)So what did he have, "concepts of a deal" or "deals in two weeks" or "deals until I change my mind"??

(25,866 posts)Trump 2.0 is a zero attention to deal organization in which you can tell him EU promised 3 trillion in New investments, not in writing and he just believes it . . . Forever.
The amazing thing for economists was that many countries actually tried to negotiate in good faith. That seems to have ended as Trump can't keep his end of the bargain or doesn't remember or didn't get a big enough golden crown.
