ME-SEN: Mills announces series of Democratic debates in lead up to U.S. Senate primary

Maine’s Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate will have five debates and forums ahead of the June 9 primary.

Janet Mills’ campaign announced those events and her commitment to participate in them Tuesday morning. There will be three televised debates hosted by Maine media outlets and two all-candidate forums organized by the Maine Democratic Party, one in each congressional district, the dates of which have yet to be announced.

Mills, who terms out as governor later this year, and political newcomer Graham Platner are the frontrunners in the Democratic primary challenging long-time Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins. Collins, who officially launched her expected bid for reelection earlier this month, is seen as one of the more vulnerable Senate Republicans heading into the midterm elections.

Platner and lesser-known Democratic challenger David Costello have not yet announced their participation in the debates and forums.
