Howard Stern asked Trump how he handled the STD risks: “It's amazing, I can't even believe it. I've been so lucky in terms of that whole world, it is a dangerous world out there. It's like Vietnam, sort of. It is my personal Vietnam. I feel like a great and very brave soldier”.

Deferments were available for some in certain conditions. True draft dodgers didn't have that choice. They had to run from the draft and hide while law officers hunted them down. Canada was an option. To truly dodge the draft took guts. I knew guys in every category. Vietnam fucked up the US so bad it is still a topic of disagreement fifty years later. I knew guys killed there. I had very close friends that were never the same after serving. My brother is six years older than I and the only time I ever saw him cry was when a former classmate was killed in Vietnam. My heart still hurts from all of it.

Watching soldiers coming back from there messed up in many ways, just to be reviled and assaulted by certain groups that seemed to be implying that every single soldier that was forced to go there was there of their own volition, and anything they did was deliberate and malicious.

Yes, there were some like this, but the majority were just trying to live to get back home. Some made it. Some despite their bodies being back home, never came back.

My family lost five in that 'police action'. They were all uncles and cousins. Some, I only know through pictures and stories.
