Engineered by Putin.

Just like Trump is screwing the US now.

2. Yes. Freer trade improves the welfare of a nation if it doesn't just go to oligarchs (like in Russia)

If only Putin had never existed. Imagine where the world would be, including the USA.

4. While the Poland and UK figures are clear, "advanced economies" is rather cloudy

We see that, for instance, Poland has already overtaken Japan in PPP GDP/capita for the IMF 2026 figures:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)_per_capita#Main_table
(their source: https://data.imf.org/en/Data-Explorer?datasetUrn=IMF.RES:WEO(9.0.0) )

Compared to the big EU countries, UK in 2026:
Germany 76,747
France 68,567
UK 67,585
Italy 65,761

In 2017, Germany was 54,551, France was 44,565, Italy 42,097 and the UK 46,441.

So, relative to the UK, in 2017 it was
Germany 1.175 times the UK
France 0.960
Italy 0.906
and in 2026
Germany 1.136
France 1.015
Italy 0.973
So there's been a general flattening of the differences, but the UK has dropped (the easiest comparison is with France, where the UK has slipped perhaps 3% with what you might expect).

"Advanced economies" is, I suppose, an average of several that includes the USA, and Germany will definitely have done badly against that too.
