I have Never seen something so cruel -and Foolish!!
What is a parent to do if they have a disabled kid when he reaches "adulthood"??
BREAKING: PURE EVIL! Trump pushes to strip lifesaving money from disabled Americans if they live in a house with family members targeting innocent people with Down Syndrome and other severe disabilities.
This is a whole new level of cruelty...
According to a bombshell report from ProPublica, a new rule proposed by the Trump administration would "slash benefits or end support for as many as 400,000 Supplemental Security Income recipients with Down syndrome, dementia and other disabilities whose parents or relatives receive SNAP benefits."
The horrifying revelation was gleaned by reviewing internal government emails, a federal regulatory listing, and by speaking with four federal officials.
ProPublica focused on the case of Shytyra Burton, a Philadelphia woman with a below 70 IQ who is unable to work and lives with her father, a sanitation worker who makes $2,000 a month. Burton receives $994 a month from the SSI program but under the Trump administration's new rule, her benefits would be reduced by the value of the bedroom she lives in her father's house.
In other words, people barely scraping by on SSI benefits will be penalized for having a roof over their heads. Mentally disabled people will be forced to reduce their monthly costs even more, going without food or medication in some instances. Those reductions will apply even if the family members they live with are poor enough to be qualify for food stamps.
Households that receive SNAP, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, are vulnerable to these cuts because of a "complicated" interlocking system of rules according to ProPublica. Basically, a family on SNAP is officially considered too poor to "financially support a disabled loved one living at home." This newly proposed rule would exploit that assessment to harm these vulnerable individuals.
Under this draconian new rule, most low-income SSI recipients will have their income slashed by a third. Some will lose their benefits altogether.
In the case of Burton, ProPublica estimates that this rule could save taxpayers a paltry $11 a day. Meanwhile, Republicans are currently arguing that we should shell out $400 million for Trump's White House ballroom. The Iran War has cost $35 billion so far.
This administration is stomping on the poorest, most vulnerable members of our society to pay for even more graft, tax cuts, and sweetheart deals for the top 1%. The fact that these Republicans call themselves "Christians" just makes the cruelty all the more galling. Jesus Christ would be horrified by these people.
The report goes on to point out that in the case of Burton, a reduction to her SSI payments could mean that her father is no longer able to support her, at which point she would have to move into a facility that could cost taxpayers hundreds of dollars more a day.
Not only is this rule evil, it's self-defeating. Nothing will be accomplished other than increased suffering for struggling Americans.

We know this because one copy of the minutes survived.
The movie's title ought give some DUers embarrassed pause, I should imagine.

(1,067 posts)...to accept the suffering your policies create for them then you can certainly get them to help you make others suffer even more.
It is very cult-like.
And they can't question it or they will find themselves right out of the cult--and then where would they be?

(13,429 posts)Families who choose to have their adult child with disabilities live with them generally incur either a loss of income because they themselves provide care for the child or incur costs to have someone else provide care. Even if families want to look for other living arrangements, there are waiting lists for group homes, nursing homes and other settings.
While there are some day programs for adults with disabilities they are grossly underfunded and generally have waiting lists to participate. And the funding for these programs is being threatened by Medicaid cuts, as Medicaid block grants provide partial funding with the rest picked up by the states.

(5,476 posts)I hate to tell him, Reagan closed down facilities and day care centers for mentally challenged people making it impossible for their caregivers to even work. Most neighborhoods don't want group homes. So just exactly where does he think they should live? They sure as heck don't get enough money to pay rent or even feed themselves. Besides, facilities and group homes have to be staffed 24 hrs a day, they have utilities that have to be paid, etc so that would not be saving money at all.

(13,559 posts)Most administrations--Republican and Democratic-- have supported the goals of helping people out of poverty, though Republicans have undercut such programs when possible. Trump's war is not on poverty itself because he and people like Russell Vought simply don't care if the poor just starve and die. Their war is on poor people individually with the goal of making their lives miserable because they're poor and, to them, not worthwhile. The inhumanity of Trump and his sycophantic minions has no limits. They are all depraved.

Imagine aliens looking at this world, this nation, and seeing our leaders deprive the poor, elderly, and disabled of food, shelter, and medical care while giving that money to billionaires and the military industrial complex.
