WASHINGTON ‒ A group of Democratic senators led by Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine tried ‒ and failed ‒ to advance a resolution prohibiting President Donald Trump from taking unilateral military action in Cuba, days after Havana publicly rejected U.S. demands.
In a mostly party-line April 28 vote, 50 Republicans and one Democrat blocked the Senate from taking up the measure. Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the Democrat who voted across the aisle.
Two GOP lawmakers, Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Rand Paul of Kentucky, bucked their party, joining with Democrats in hopes of curbing Trump's actions in the Caribbean nation.
Democrats were aiming to keep the U.S. military from engaging in hostilities in or against Cuba without congressional approval. Trump has been warning of a takeover of Cuba, feeding anxiety among Democratic lawmakers who are fearful that negotiations with Havana are a pretense for an invasion.

Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vermont, told USA TODAY he thinks the Trump administrations strategy in Cuba is to crush them into dust.

(3,960 posts)I'm as down on Fetterman as one could possibly be, but that's not what the vote was. Just like Hillary didn't "Vote for the Iraq War". More accurate to say he (and she) voted to allow POTUS to decide whether to go to war, not "to go to war".
Doing the math here, had he voted with our side, Vance would've cast the deciding vote anyway in the 50/50 tie that would've ensued so it's largely symbolic (of the fact that he loves him some Donald J. Trump
)

(3,960 posts)then it's more accurately called a vote "to let Trump decide", rather than "to go to war". Much like Hillary's (and Kerry's) Iraq War votes were at the time. I've made this argument about their votes in that case many times over the years when people said "Hillary voted for the Iraq War", I've said "no, she didn't!", as I'm doing here. And I endeavor to keep logical consistency, even if I don't like the person that I may end up showing largesse to as a result. To the consternation of many at times
Don't get me wrong, I'm pissed at the guy, and it's better to err on the side of disallowing Trump to do ANY given thing he might want to do, clearly. IOW, it's still a dick move, regardless
IN REALITY this measure shouldn't even be NEEDED. It should be a GIVEN that he cannot start a war without Congressional Approval, outside the most extreme, pressing (and defensive) circumstances. Which these are CLEARLY NOT

(29,960 posts)It was probably a big factor as to why Democratic primary voters favored Obama over Hillary Clinton in 2008.
As far as Cuba the US with Trump is doing to them what Israel did to Gaza long before the conflict restarted, he is trying to starve them, so I would do everything possible not to enable him.

(778 posts)Public opinion matters as proven by Trumps ability to engage the electorate while not in office for four years. I believe votes like this matter, even if ultimately they do not become law. Optics matter, especially when the tie has to be broken by the executive branch or the will of the congress is to prevent a war as yet supported by evidence. If a 51-49 vote doesnt mean diddly, then surely any advocacy on our part doesnt matter unless we have the votes. The scholastic rock version of the political process isnt the only one that matters.

"I didn't vote for people to get bitten. I voted only to give the cobra the choice whether or not to bite people."
I interpreted the headline as cutting to the chase. The end result is that if you don't stop the ogre from doing something, you're basically telling him to go ahead because, in the end, that's what he's going to do anyway.

(241 posts)What happened to the progressive John Fetterman I voted for?
When I heard him speak-- I got chills. I thought, this man understands what our country needs. He seemed so kind, so passionate.
I don't think I was fooled.
We'll never know, was it the stroke that nearly killed him or the treatment for depression?
Either something caused a personality change...or he is one hell of an actor.
I wonder what the rules for a recall are.
