WASHINGTON (AP) Many Republicans who have been uneasy with President Donald Trumps war in Iran emphasized that there would be a May 1 deadline for Congress to intervene. But the date is now set to pass with no action from GOP lawmakers who continue to defer to the White House.
Under the War Powers Resolution of 1973, Congress must declare war or authorize the use of force within 60 days a deadline that falls on Friday or within 90 days if the president asks for an extension. But Congress made no attempt at enforcing that requirement, leaving town for a week on Thursday after the Senate rejected a Democratic attempt to halt the war for a sixth time.
The Trump administration has shown no interest in seeking congressional approval at all. It is arguing that the deadlines set by the law dont apply because the war in Iran effectively ended when a ceasefire began in early April.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said Thursday he doesnt plan on a vote to authorize force in Iran or otherwise weigh in.

Trump doesn't give a shit about the law because he knows there are no consequences.

(27,552 posts)Congress should cut off the war funding, bring our military back to take care of their needs because there are plenty as has been reported.

When allies pushed back on Greenland threats, he "walked away."
For the felon, there is no walking away on Iran.
He is incapable of negotiating.
His demands will never be met.
The Iranian regime cares not for the suffering of it's people. No amount of bombing will "win" this war as long as IRGC and Basij with jet skis and cheap drones can inflict damage on neighbors, oil tankers, and container ships.
The only "out" is surrender and reparations -- and epic humiliation.-- which he will NEVER allow.
The magnitude of the damage to this nation and the world done by his criminal Iran insanity will escalate every week as the year progresses.
Republicans are in denial. They have their fingers in their ears, singing "la la la." The creatures are hanging on to the fantasy that the felon's criminal war on Iran will magically come to an end and things will "snap back" to some sort of tolerable trumpian business as usual.
But that will NEVER happen with the felon in the White House. There is no out with Trump in power.
He IS the crisis.
The ONLY way to end the crisis is if he leaves.
If enough of them wake up and see this reality we'll see an effort to push him out. A push to resign for "health reasons" or some face saving bullshit.
Resignation is not outside the realm of possibility.
If that does come to pass, they'll find they left it to long. It's too late. Many, many Republican careers are over. The party can't "live down" this level of chaos and destruction. And they only have themselves to blame.

Or authorizung an extension.
The authority to wage war automatically terminates, unless further authorized by Congress. So inaction is termination of the legal authority, not authorization to carry on.
The media needs to be accurately reporting the reality that, without action by Congress, the president is acting illegally.
