Rand Paul wants to end birthright citizenship

OK, I'll go along with that under ONE condition: it is retroactive to the year 1787, the year of the US Constitution.

Anyone born of non-North American born parents OR THEIR DESCENDANTS after 1787 are to be considered as immigrants, and are thus not to be considered citizens of the United States. They may apply for citizenship like everyone else.

In addition, while we're at it, before anyone can be sworn in to the positions of President, Vice-President, Senator, Representative, or Justice of the Supreme Court or any District Court of the United States, they must pass a supervised test identical to that given to all applicants for citizenship. They must pass with a percentage identical to that demanded of all prospective citizens. If they cannot pass the test, they may not take office, and are not eligible to re-apply for a period of two years. The laws pertaining to succession in such office are to be the same that would apply as if such prospective office holder had become unable to fulfill the duties required of such office (death, incapacity, etc.).

That way, we eliminate in advance any possible future embarrassing Senator Tubervilles (or, I suspect, President Trumps) from ever taking office.

The citizenship test isn’t some first grade exercise. It gets slightly varied, of course, so that not everyone gets the same one, but it does require a more than elemental knowledge of the Constitution and how the Federal government works. I haven’t checked recently, but a copy used to be online. www.usacitizenshiptest.gov/anyidiot

I may not be recalling the website exactly. Better you look it up yourself, if you’re curious. It probably is at a fifth or sixth grade level, so at least half the Republicans in Congress should be able to pass it.

My Mom's family goes all the way back to the 1600s (we had three relatives accused in the Salem witch hysteria), but my Dad's family didn't come over until the late 1800s. So I might qualify for citizenship!

Because that's what it will take ... an Amendment along with ratification by 3/4 of the states.
AFTER it has been approved by both Houses of Congress and signed by the President.
Not likely to happen but ....
