In honor of this being the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Day

I wanted to draw attention to those women and girls who often go unnoticed and, sadly, all too often remain unsolved murders. They are also, often, either survivors of the notorious residential schools or children of survivors. This travesty goes beyond borders as did the residential schools. Here is some information from a Canadian perspective:

Canada's history with regard to Canadian Indigenous Peoples has been atrocious and still needs much work to address the wrongs committed.

In 2008 the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established as part of a legal settlement, the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, between Survivors, the Government of Canada, the Assembly of First Nations and Inuit representatives, and the church bodies that ran residential schools.

The Commission finished it's work and issued it's report in 2015 with 94 calls to action. How many of those actions have been addressed and to what degree remains an open question, imo.

We still have a very, very long way to go but I am thankful for the Commission and it's Calls to Action.

For those interested, here is a link to the 94 Calls to Action in the Report (PDF):

I think the reason it began the way it is was due to the overwhelming number of Indigenous women and girls, even over the number of Indigenous men and boys, that have been ignored, erased as if they never existed solely because they were indigenous.

dedicated to gatherings to celebrate Indigenous culture and to, hopefully, start the healing process for all the survivors of the residential schools and the families of the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. I always stop there during my walk. There are painted stones with messages, poems, children's shoes in memory of the children who died in those residential schools placed beneath the covered 'gazebo' and empty red dresses hung on nearby trees. It is called the Healing Garden, here is a picture of it and some background on it:

A place for healing

The Healing Garden was created along the Red Willow Trail across from St. Albert Place in 2017 to recognize and acknowledge the survivors of Indian Residential Schools in St. Albert. It is meant to be a therapeutic place of reconciliation that will bring awareness, education, and cultural teachings to the community.

The Healing Garden is a community project led by a planning committee consisting of survivors of Indian Residential Schools, representatives from the First Nations and Métis communities, the United Church, the Catholic Church, the general community and the City of St. Albert.

Mission

It is to be a place of truth and reconciliation, a visible sign of our community’s commitment to walk in right relations with First Nation, Métis and Inuit peoples, and with all Nations.

Vision

To create an accessible therapeutic sanctuary for survivors of Indian Residential Schools, and victims of abuse on a transformative reconciling journey. To connect with an entire community for heightened awareness, to learn and grow from trauma to triumph, through prayer, meditation, and cultural teachings.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission

In March 2015, Edmonton hosted the last national event of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The Truth and Reconciliation Report (TRC) was created as a component of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement and strives to document the truth of the survivors, families and communities who were part of the experience. This has been a historic time for our country that will help us to pave a path for all of us to walk together with respect and mutual understanding.

When my daughter comes for a walk with me she knows there is going to be an essential stop along the way, we both feel very moved every time we stop there. I feel very lucky to have this close enough to visit it a lot.

Tears here as well.

It was terrible and Indigenous Peoples in both Canada and the US have suffered and continue to suffer the impact of the boarding/residential schools. The damage has been generational, sadly.
