Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday that commemorates Mexicos victory over Napoleon IIIs French army in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is widely observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, often marked by parades and festivals in communities with large Mexican American populations.
The Trump administrations aggressive mass deportation and immigration enforcement policies have sparked widespread concern in immigrant communities, with organizers of several Cinco de Mayo parades and festivals citing fear of ICE activity, raids, and detentions as a reason for reduced participation or outright cancellations.
In Chicagos Little Village neighborhood, organizers canceled the annual Cinco de Mayo parade for a second consecutive year.
The Cermak Road Chamber of Commerce and Casa Puebla said in a statement, many families are experiencing fear and uncertainty due to increased immigration enforcement actions and the ongoing threat of raids.
