WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump has renewed his criticism of Pope Leo XIV, potentially complicating a fence-mending visit that Secretary of State Marco Rubio plans to make this week to the Vatican.
In an interview with conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt, Trump said the first American-born pontiff is helping Iran and also making the world less safe with his comments about the importance of not treating immigrants with disrespect.
The pope would rather talk about the fact that its OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon, Trump said in the interview on Monday. And I dont think thats very good. I think hes endangering a lot of Catholics and a lot of people.
The pope, however, has not said Iran should obtain nuclear weapons. Hes called for more peace talks, and criticized war with Iran generally and Trumps specific threats of mass civilian strikes. The pope also has emphasized that hes reflecting biblical and church teachings, not speaking as a political rival to Trump.

Pope Leo has responded to attacks by US President Donald Trump, saying he hoped to be able to preach the Gospel and about peace, but anyone was free to criticise him.
In his latest remarks about the pontiff, Trump suggested that he believed that it was okay for Iran to have a nuclear weapon.
The Pope has said no such thing, but he has opposed the US and Israel's war on Iran. His stance has angered Trump, prompting the US president to lash out repeatedly.
The latest exchange comes as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio heads to the Vatican for a two-day visit this week.
