Shomari Figures says he expects courts to maintain congressional redistricting injunction
U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures, D-Mobile, said at a Montgomery town hall Thursday evening that he did not expect the U.S. Supreme Court to lift an injunction barring Alabama from changing district lines before 2030.
Speaking to about 100 people at an event focused on the Legislatures special session this week, Figures who represents the 2nd Congressional District in south Alabama, the most likely target of Republican redistricting efforts noted the U.S. Supreme Courts ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which significantly weakened the Voting Rights Act and opened the door to the special session, excluded Alabama.
So right now, that court order is in place, as well as the fact that the Supreme Court said that were not touching the Alabama case, Figures said. So I feel pretty confident that the lines will stay the same in the immediate future, but it has not changed the efforts of Republicans here in the state of Alabama and across the country.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to dissolve the 2030 injunction and also requested the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals overturn a 2025 ruling that led to the redrawing of two state Senate districts in Montgomery. The Legislature this week is considering two bills HB 1, sponsored by Speaker Pro Tempore Chris Pringle, R-Mobile, and SB 1, sponsored by Sen. Chris Elliott, R-Josephine that would allow the state to hold new primary elections in the affected districts should the attorney general win one or both of the legal challenges.
