The Right Wing Fascist/Nazi-speak is utilizing this pair of words prior to each lie they tell. It is a presumptive condition that what is about to follow is a UNIVERSALLY ACCEPTED TRUTH.
Everybody knows that the elections were rigged
Everybody knows that solar and wind power is useless
Everybody knows that Joe Biden is enfeebled.
When I was in college, I had an acquaintance who, parenthetically, went on to a nationally renowned career in medicine. She was overwhelmingly opinionated about absolutely everything and would begin nine sentences out of ten with the words You know,. It was thus nearly impossible to discuss or argue with her because, well, you know youd be on the wrong side of, well, any thesis.
It is a form of hypnosis and has aided Trump and his repulsive minions in basically forcing people to either agree with them or get off the bus. It is insidious and beyond undemocratic.
And one more thing: You know, everybody knows that these people are Nazis at heart.

(43,686 posts)In my communication classes. I told them to beware of you know because it means the speaker doesnt know.
You know is a speech crutch for the inarticulate..
Points were taken off in speeches where the speaker said you know more than once.

(28,149 posts)that follows it is true. If everybody knows something, then there is no need to state that fact up front. It's like admitting you are either lying or very unsure of your premise. And, as the OP points out, highly likely that the speaker is desperate to persuade others to believe something that just isn't true.

(20,939 posts)that everything coming out of a Trumpublican's mouth is a lie, but some refuse to admit it if it furthers their own agenda.

(33,414 posts)The thankfully former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene had a famous example when she advocated for a national divorce on grounds that everyone she knows supported it: We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government. Everyone I talk to says this.

(8,269 posts)that someone who uses that phrase is just full of bovine excrement.
And it triggers my old-man Oppositional Defiance brain activity.
"Oppositional defiance, or ODD, is a behavioral disorder characterized by a persistent pattern of anger, irritability, defiance, and vindictive behavior toward authority figures."
I see it as a defense mechanism rather than a 'behavioral disorder'.

(14,155 posts)Says (you know it's true or I know it and you know it or everybody knows ) to a reporter or show host, that reporter or show host would say shut the fuck up. Or just say, no I don't know that's true. Show me the proof. Or if that's true why haven't you sued? Just something to acknowledge it's a lie and they know it.

(2,233 posts)In their world, no one ever needs evidence to substantiate anything. After all, everybody knows.
Which is especially hilarious in the context of the uninformed, post-factual society they have created. If anything, nobody knows is closer to the truth in this country nowadays.

(5,322 posts)sick, starving, and/or DEAD as soon as possible!
(or disenfranchised from voting through Trump's various schemes,
most of which are being defeated in the courts!)
Well, maybe 'everybody' doesn't 'know' that yet---
but more and more people who previously supported Trump are figuring it out---
and Trump and the Republicans aren't doing anything to help themselves---
instead, every day they make things worse for themselves!
Forget 2020, forget 2006 and 2008, forget 1974----
For 2026 and 2028, I'm beginning to envision "Democratic wave" elections
in Rooseveltian proportions !!!!!! (Think 1932 and 1934)
((YES, they are doing everything they can for the House of Representatives
with redistricting before the next census--- but it won't be enough to save their House---
and statewide votes for U.S. Senators CAN'T BE gerrymandered,
since they are state-wide votes... I have expectations that
at least ONE Republican senator whom they thought was 'safe',
will FAIL to be re-elected in 2026--- and by 2028, who knows??))
The Republicans will have no idea what hit them---
partly because they believe all their own lies about "what the people want"
and "how great the economy is",
and partly because all the policy shifts they passed in their 'big beautiful bill'
are bound to hit the poor rural red states (their party base) to the worst effects !!!
The SNAP work requirements for old people (age 55-64) and cuts are already
beginning to take effect---- and the cuts and 'work requirements' for Medicaid
are scheduled to begin in January 2027--- well before the 2028 elections!
(If the congressional Republicans had a brain in their heads, which they don't,
they would have scheduled BOTH things to begin not before January 2029! LOL)
((And of COURSE their refusal to renew the larger subsidies for 'Obamacare'
drove the cost of health insurance up for EVERYONE who had to buy it--- and more people blamed
the Republicans rather than the Democrats for the 'government shutdown'
over that issue!))
An electoral 'nuclear bomb' is set to detonate in November---
and it's relative 'throw-weight' is increasing, day by intolerable day!

(42,760 posts)It's not an explanation, it's not making an argument. It's just an order (or, at best, a pitch) to believe him despite a total lack of supporting evidence or logic. It's a dead giveaway that he has no point of argument that's even remotely convincing. All he can do is beg, and hope his "charisma"
carries the day.
