They showed a clip of Trump vilifying Platner, saying he's the most corrupt person ever to run for office. My head absolutely exploded. This orange idiot who has been convicted of thirty-four felonies and sexual assault and is in the Epstein files said Platner is the most corrupt person ever to run for office.
My god, words fail me.

(4,242 posts)i don't know the rationale. Though he is crazy, usually there is some connection, like the person's size, or age, or a pun on one's name.
Maybe this is just the best opposite of the person he could unconsciously come up with. Or projection, as usual.
I hope Platner understands the honor of being Trump's #1 target.
It might be that the most important personal attribute we need in Platner is courage.

(20,965 posts)If Democrats win control of Congress they'll just shift to hate, vitriol, and outright lying mode, the same as they've always done with Democrats in power.
In fact, I'd wager their ratings are better when Democrats are in power, because their viewers tune in more often to get their talking points, hate speech (which they cherish) and marching orders.
I could be wrong, though. It's happened before. 😉

(1,405 posts)They say Platner has a lot of warts, and he is not what you would call "the pick of the Parish."
They tell me he started a feud with the lobster fisherman, and may have an affinity for swastikas.
I have no idea whether he is being targeted unfairly or not.
It doesn't matter much to me.
Provided he hasn't molested children, raped women, or tortured animals, if I lived in Maine
I would vote for him just to send Collins to obscurity.
I have some concern that he may be a republican plant (he has some traits) to sabotage the dems chances of winning the seat.
Politically, Maine is like a hybrid of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The people there may feel the same way as I do.

(1,405 posts)As I replied to another DU,
Most of my relatives live or lived in Maine. Only 2 are MAGAs, the rest were democrats, except one aunt who voted for Nixon and Reagan.
One cousin in particular is very politically active. I knew nothing about this candidate, and she explained the dynamic and details
about the race to me: Mills was essentially out of the race, leaving Platner. The two examples I posted about the lobstermen and the
Nazi tattoo were the most concerning to her and her circle of friends. Its not a black-white situation. Like all of us, he has a past.
Next time, I will canvas the city of Saco and Biddeford so my experience isn't simply anecdotal.
Platner is going to attract criticism for legitimate reasons. The level of scrutiny will be the issue regarding fairness in coverage.
Easterncedar
(6,602 posts)You keep on telling whatever you want to!
Bluetus
(3,212 posts)It is not a case where Mills wasn't really in the race so the only real option was Platner.
The facts are exactly opposite that. Mills was backed by the entire Dem establishment. She was the chosen candidate. She didn't leave the race until it became obvious that the people of Maine were going to vote strongly in favor of her retirement. She left the race after she saw she was 20+ points behind and losing ground every day. And even though Mills reminded everybody she was still on the ballot a few days before the vote, she lost 72-20. WTF is anybody even talking about here? The people closest to the situation have made their choice and it isn't even close.
You are entitled to your opinion about Platner. But I will not stand for gaslighting what actually happened, even if you know some people who heard some other people say ...

(15,551 posts)Platner is definitely not perfect and the right wing propaganda machine is doing a great job of swiftboating him.
When we consider his message, we cannot be surprised, because like AOC and Mamdani, he has lifted his eyes beyond the lip noises made by profit-driven corporate 'news' media.
The historical antecedent of this, of course, is when Congress sent a new Fairness Doctrine bill to the snake Reagan and he killed it by veto in 1987. THAT is what has happened, and it is by careful design.
