My spouse and I are progressive and live in a centrist-leaning city in CA. We have a little library in front of our house, and we make a point of keeping explicitly political and/or religious material out of it. If a neighbor puts anything in there that might be construed as political/religious, we remove it immediately, even if we agree with beliefs being expressed. We want our library to be for the whole community, not just those who are on “our side”.

Don’t get me wrong - I truly hate what the MAGA mindset is doing to our country. But if we’re ever going to recover a sense of broader community, we need to preserve some neutral spaces where we can find common ground.

Characteristics of Psychopaths
1. Aggressive, callous, and cunning
2. Completely void of conscience and empathy
3. Adept at manipulating others
4. Willing to engage in immoral, criminal conduct
5. Willing to take what they want and do as they please, regardless of who is hurt or wronged
6. Deceptive ability to appear outwardly benevolent
7. Deceptive ability to behave in superficially charming ways to hide purely selfish motives
8. Willing to use force, intimidation, and violence to control others in order to satisfy their own needs
9. Willing to intentionally violate the basic inherent human rights of others
10. Completely lacking any sense of guilt or remorse for the harm their actions cause
11. Rationalize their own immoral behavior
12. Attempt to lay blame upon someone else for their own bad conduct
13. Will deny their own wrongdoing outright
14. Display utter contemptuousness toward the feelings and desires of others
15. Exhibit pathological lying, will compulsively say anything without any concern for the truth to advance their own agendas
16. Able to fake normal human emotions and empathy with the exception of joy, laughter
17. Have a distorted sense of the consequences of their actions
18. Totally fail to accept any responsibility for their own socially irresponsible ways
19. Strongly believe that they will never be brought to justice for their criminal behavior

I truly hope that find what you're looking for. ❤️

I feel it’s still worth the effort to try and find some common ground with the remaining sane-but-mislead folks.

But if you’re a full on racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, homophobic MAGA True Believer, well… sorry, but there’s no common ground to find.

It's amazing that psychopaths didn't make the cut in your list of undesirables.

We can't pick and choose another person's path to enlightenment.

We can, however, educate ourselves on who and what to expose ourselves and our children to if we hope to prevent evil influences from invading their peace.

That’s why I mentioned these “isms”. My post was about a Little Library hosted by a (presumed) MAGA supporter, not about listing every single kind of dangerous or repellent personality disturbance or disorder out there. You are the one who brought up psychopathy, not me - and I simply don’t share your fixation on the subject. Amazing as that may be.

As for picking and choosing another’s “path to enlightenment”, I (softly) objected to a woman’s hijacking of her neighbor’s Little Library, even though she NEVER indicated that it contained anything like The Turner Diaries or Mein Kampf. Don’t you think it’s a bit of a stretch to turn that into “paths to enlightenment” and “evil influences”?

It's great that you're running your little library that way, but from what the video said, she was just adding things to make the neighbor's library better reflect her community's already liberal values. That seems pretty reasonable to me.

But nowhere in the video does she suggest that the library held any books that ran counter to the prevailing values of the community. Only that the home owner flew a tRump flag. So, by adding items that reflect her beliefs is she not encouraging the home owner to do the same?

I thought it was implied, but you're right that she did not actually say that.

I still think what she did was okay, if all she did was add liberal leaning titles. If she was deliberately removing and replacing conservative materials, that would be more questionable, imo. But all she talked about was adding books.

She could have ensured there was a library that reflected her community’s values without having to hijack someone else’s. And it looks like she put inserts into ALL the books in his library, even those she hadn’t personally added.

I don’t know, this just felt unnecessary and performative to me. And counter to the whole point of Little Libraries. That’s all I’m saying. At the same time though, I DO understand the impulse - I get the “why”.

My confusion might hinge on your definition of "explicitly political or religious" material.

If somebody donates a book about comparative religion, will you remove it? Why? Isn't education the key to understanding?

What about Michelle Obama's autobiography? Removed for being political? Your neighbors will miss out on learning the facts about this remarkable woman's life.

We WOULD include serious, scholarly biographies and autobiographies, even by individuals who might be perceived as political (or politics-adjacent), but we don’t include propaganda masquerading as biography. We’d also include scholarly biographies of individuals who are religious figures, such as a Pope. We’d also accept a book on comparative religion, as it again would be a scholarly work and not, presumably, an effort to “sell” any one religion (or no religion) as “true”.

What we will and have removed are books by professional political shit-stirrers (like the late Rush Limbaugh), Catholic anti-abortion “crisis pregnancy” literature, and Jehovah’s Witness tracts. If the intent is to inflame or to proselytize, it will be removed.

I certainly agree with removing the types of books you reference. I'm not sure there are many equivalencies on the liberal side.

Just as the home owner in this story flies his flag, we express our values and identity proudly. The Little Library is it’s own thing.
