Trump Moves to Deeply Censor the Entire Internet

The White House and Congress are working on a deal to clamp down on what US citizens are allowed to say online. According to new reporting by Axios, the Trump administration is negotiating with key senators in an effort to shoehorn a massive legislation package which would limit states’ abilities to regulate AI in exchange for placing broad federal limits on digital speech.

Plenty of ink has been spilled about the Trump administration’s push to revoke AI regulation from individual states. Though the White House and its allies frame this as a matter of “safety” and “national security,” the timing is telling, coming as progressive state governments move to restrict the building of AI data centers and hold tech companies liable for harms their AI systems cause.

What makes this deal particularly insidious is the trade-off at its core. Per Axios, congressional lawmakers lead by Republican Marsha Blackburn are essentially offering to surrender their ability to regulate AI in exchange for three federal censorship bills: the Kids Online Safety Act, the NO FAKES Act, and a federal age verification mandate.

While the language around these three measures suggests common-sense cyber regulation, activists say they really amount to a massive censorship regime that is fundamentally anti-democratic.

...

The Kids Online Safety Act (KORA) for example, would force social media giants to restrict lawful speech based on Federal Trade Commission regulations. FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression) complains that this would give the federal government too much power to hold platforms like Meta accountable for their harms — which, many would argue, is long overdue. But given that just a few corporations own the vast majority of web infrastructure and social media, KORA would give the Trump-controlled FTC major power to bend the internet to its will.

It’s not clear from the article, but unless the government acts before the speech occurs, then it’s not a first amendment issue.

The bill appears to be a Trojan Horse to deregulate AI and immunize platforms against liability for instance, allowing deepfake AI porn of real people, famous or not, to be posted,

If a law is passed saying social media companies are no longer immune from civil suits for the comments they allow to be published, that’s not a free speech issue, that is a liability issue comparable to newspaper or book publisher.

Right now, Elon Musk is using X to foment violence against immigrants in Ireland. Facebook has been used as a platform to promote genocide in Myanmar, among other places.

They did and there is little to no draw back for them.

They are banning books left and right and there is also little push back.

There is a reason why they are a cult. They do a lot of unpopular things Americans don’t support and somehow they get away with it.

They should be considered publishers, with the same liabilities.

Right now, Elon Musk is using X to foment violence against immigrants in Ireland.

You can’t spout violent, racist, criminal words in the comment section of the NYT or WaPo, and the same should be true for X and Facebook, etc.

regulate AI in exchange for three federal censorship bills: the Kids Online Safety Act, the NO FAKES Act, and a federal age verification mandate."

What kind of fucking fascist "exchange" is this?

There is nothing these lunatics can offer that is worth surrendering the right to regulate AI. Nothing. We only have one chance to get that right. It's crazy enough that all these data centers are being shoved down our throats as is, with no regulation whatsoever.

I am in favor of the NO FAKES Act (which finally gives Americans a right to their own voice and likeness), but only if it is passed outside of this insane fascist blackmail scheme. Anyone and everyone in favor of making this "deal" needs to be thrown out of office.
