Texas school district plans to segregate 5,000 students with disabilities--bus them to far away separate, but equal facil

This is SO wrong!!

Texas school district plans to segregate 5,000 students with disabilities—bus them to far away separate, but equal facilities.

Now even Trump's Dept. of Education has opened civil rights investigation.

"Longer bus rides could create challenges for students with medical needs," federal government report states.

"Schools cannot exclude students with disabilities simply because of their disability status."

The school district's plan would move kids from their neighborhood schools starting this year—to designated "Special Education Specialty Schools."

Parents argue that it removes children from their communities, long-time friendships, routines, and established support networks.

Houston Independent School District officials claim busing students with disabilities will help the district address long-standing compliance issues.

“Special Education Specialty Schools."

Back in the 90’s, before any of me and my buddies had kids, Gov. Gilmore’s DOE came out with its standardized tests Standards Of Learning or….. SOL’s. We all looked at each other 👀 did no one at ANY TIME bring up what SOL means?

That anyone would think this is a good idea and then implement it is outrageous. Why pick on the most vulnerable members of our society? What happened to basic human decency? I think the best thing for students with disabilities is to integrate them into society and keep them in familiar surroundings with all the support they need and not to ship them off to some "separate but equal facilities."

This is straight out of the Nazi playbook and another reason I have no respect for Texas (sorry Texan DUers; I know there are fine and decent people in Texas who abhor this kind of thing; I just don't like the leaders your fellow Texans keep electing).

So many of our problems can be tied back to Fox it's not funny. Greg Abbott is one Murdoch endorsed parasite we cannot get rid of no matter how hard we try.

If we want to take down the GOP, our first step is to take down the Fox Ministry Of Propaganda.

FOX has never had a particularly large audience. Less than 1% of the population watches FOX in a typical day. Right wing talk radio has been a far more insidious party responsible for brainwashing the cult. (50 million listeners compare to 3 million viewers on FOX)

It is a fact that Fox News viewership is very small in the grand scheme of things. Hardly anyone watches any 24 hour "news" channel. Talk radio has an exponentially bigger audience and is a significantly bigger influence. Add in online and social media as much bigger influences at this point than Fox News.

Rush Limbaugh is significantly more responsible for the current MAGA version of the Republican party than Fox News. In fact, Fox News wouldn't even exist if it weren't for Rush Limbaugh.

by abbott with the claim that HISD was doing really poorly (there were 9 or 10 other districts that were worse, but Houston is a Dem city in a red state, and is very diverse in its population). The guy was booted from at least one public school district for embezzling funds from the distict to go to his private christian school conglomerate in Colorado (or Oklahoma).

School is where kids make lasting friendships with people of all types. Kids learn that they have more in common with other people no matter their circumstances than they have differences with those same people. Separating students will lead to us vs. them mentality. I guess if the powerful feel that special needs students may not grow up to be serfdom's worker bees that they have lesser value and should be treated as such. Dog, I hate these people.

I teach special needs children (pre-K to Grade 8).

They heavily depend upon routine and predictability.

A longer bus ride to and from school could affect them emotionally and/or psychologically, leaving them too stressed upon arrival at school to allow meaningful work and progress. Same thing upon return home. And the bus drivers will be ill-prepared to deal with one or a multitude of students who are agitated.

This is anything but helpful.

Houston ISD was taken over by the state several years back due to low test scores. This is of course all part of Abbott's overall plan to punish blue cities for noncompliance. Fort Worth ISD is being taken over by the state this coming school year for the same reason. And Austin ISD is in similar danger, due to three middle schools (all of which have a high number of ELL and refugee students) that have failed standardized testing for 5 years in a row.

Even if the majority of the district is passing, having even one school that is failing can trigger a statewide takeover, and once that happens (as has happened to Houston and FWISD), you are basically locked in a Nazi regime where teachers are forced to teach completely scripted curriculum, down to what you must be teaching every minute of every day. Monitors walk the halls and if you are "off" your assigned curriculum, you get written up and they can fire you. It's hell. And they don't just punish the failing schools, but the entire district.

You may ask, but why are these districts not improving their scores? The Texas legislature back in the 90's came up with a skewed formula called "Robin Hood" that takes money from school districts in blue cities and redirects it to rural districts in red areas. This would actually be fine and fair, except that the formula is completely out of balance, so that the red rural districts get so much excess money they are rolling in funding and have enough to build water parks for their kids, while Austin ISD has a $180 million dollar deficit for this coming school year.

https://www.kxan.com/investigations/aisd-points-to-20m-water-park-as-proof-robin-hood-formula-doesnt-work/

But back to the Houston ISD sp ed debacle. This is horrific, and it's important to remember that the people now running Houston ISD are not the people the parents have chosen. The state has taken over, gotten rid of their school board and all local control, and the actual people who live in that community, who send their children to those schools, no longer have a voice. And this will happen in FWISD and Austin ISD as well (and all the other blue cities shortly after) if we do not prevail in November.

My daughter has Down Syndrome and having her attend school with typical kids has been very important to her development. Plus, it’s been wonderful how the typical kids have been so accepting of her and the others like her in the school and how the activities that have been set up foster those positive interactions. Fortunately, I’m in Connecticut not Texas.
