Bill allowing consolidation of county school boards passes Alabama House

The Alabama House of Representatives Tuesday passed a bill that would allow county school boards to consolidate.

HB 380, sponsored by Rep. Terri Collins, R-Decatur, is a constitutional amendment that would allow two or more public county school boards to combine into one multi-county board of education.

“They could join with another board, or two or even three,” Collins said Tuesday. “They could combine some of that administration and they could put more money back in the classroom.”

Collins said the bill originated from HB 178, sponsored by Rep. Danny Garrett, R-Trussville, that allows for city school boards to consolidate. Garrett’s bill passed the House last month and is now in the Senate. Collins did not mention any country districts that are currently seeking consolidation.
