FEMA and the NFL team up to make stadiums available for disaster situations

Source: ABC News

As Hurricane Helene makes its way toward the northern Gulf of Mexico and possibly through Atlanta, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is turning to an unlikely partner in disaster preparations: the National Football League.

The federal agency and the NFL are teaming up to allow for NFL stadiums to be used as “mission ready locations” during major disaster events, FEMA said in a news release.

“During large-scale emergencies, like the COVID-19 pandemic, hurricanes, or tornados, we’ve seen how large music, sports and entertainment venues can serve as a safe space for communities,” FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell said. Criswell called the partnership with the NFL “groundbreaking” and will make communities “more resilient.”

The then-New Orleans Superdome was used as a place where people were camped out for days during and after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. FEMA says NFL stadiums are an ideal venue because of their location and access for all people. FEMA says 73% of NFL stadiums are accessible by public transportation.

5. I remember watching the footage from Katrina

and feeling so much despair about what I was seeing. I can't imagine what it was like for the people affected by the storm.

Anderson Cooper was on the ground covering the story, and burst into tears at one point.

I had a similar feeling of despair watching the insurrection, in real time, on January 6.

“Heckuva job, Brownie! “ said Dubya.

Claims that rescue from the Dome were impossible were belied by CNN reporters right there on the ground. The reporters got there, and they were just gutted by what they were seeing.

I didn’t know how it could get worse until … Trump met COVID and did a handoff to Jared.

All it takes is a President who doesn’t believe in government appointing a bunch of people who don’t believe in government and who are out for whatever they can get.

Bill Clinton left FEMA in good shape and professionally staffed. Barack Obama did the same for the CDC, and made sure there was a book of instructions on how to handle the next pandemic.

3. It's the least they can do. For their outrageous salaries of the staff and the taxpayers that make it possible.

6. They better put a massive amount of professional planning into supplies. Hurricane Katrina was Hell on Earth.

And for God’s sake, make sure FEMA is professionalized and not passed around to someone’s old college roommate or son in law. Looking at you, Dubya and Trump.

8. Yes! Also a plan for searching and confiscating weapons

I remember there were several shootings and robberies at the New Orleans Superdome in the Katrina aftermath. Victims felt helpless because there was nowhere else to go. Of course, no police protection anywhere either.

10. Police behaved poorly. There were reports of shootings from a bridge...

They seemed more interested in protecting property than people. White people “scavenged” for vital supplies while Black people “looted” diapers and water.

Pisses me off to this day.

9. This is a good idea for cities in low-lying areas

We'll never need it in Pittsburgh because most of our homes are higher up than the stadiums are. Other cities aren't so lucky though. Miami, New Orleans, Jacksonville, Houston, almost the entire island of Manhattan. I shudder to think what would happen if they get a direct hit from a big hurricane with a storm surge.
